bailey: ...i guess i could...but so is ear wax.

"cc": in case connie is too modest to mention it, she's prepared a cd/printout combo of the voice2007 material. supposedly i am her first victi...er, customer, as she put it.

might be good to private-message her on that so as not to run afoul of any vo-bb rules on commercialism.

i do intend to write up a review of sorts once i've gone through the material.

I think that there is GOOD and not-so-good - and that the trained ear should be able to pick them out. It is part of the self-evaluation process to listen to the market and determine what works and what doesn't. Try picking out local spots from national spots. Should be easy to do - they are simply "better" spots - from both the writing AND from the performance - in most cases. If you hear a local spot that shines - you have to figure out what was it that stood out to you. If you hear a national spot that sucks, try to figure out why.

The challenge for us these days is that recording in a vacuum trick - deciding when the stuff is ready to send - either to an actual client, or for auditions. It takes knowing yourself, your niche(s), your abilities to interpret copy, etc. I still struggle with that - especially on auditions.

(Thanks Bob, VOICE 2007 was really a great time from both doing my presentation and watching the other presentations. And it was very interesting listening to the playback while editing the material - I cut out a LOT of 'ums!")

Connie,

You have reminded me of an article I read about a month ago. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7238637.stm) The article can be used as a teaser for creating your marketing brand and for self evaluation. Has it anything do to with VO? No. But, it has a fantastic insight into the irrationality of our, our clients and possible future lover's mindset.

Here's is selection from the article I found particularly interesting. These steps should be used when looking at one's own information concerning their current position and how you should present that information to the world:

Quote:
* framing (how you present data is as important as the data itself)
* impact bias (overestimation of possible outcomes),
* confirmation bias (recognising only data that supports your hypothesis)
* loss aversion (we stand to gain more than we would lose, but our fear of loss prevents us)
* selective perception (seeing what you want to see),and
* rosy retrospection (integral to the repeated experience of family Christmas)

In other words; are you being honest with yourself and to others?

These two have hit me over and over since starting to do a voice seminar. My class is an introductory overview - and many of the people in the class are in that blissfully unaware state of unconscious incompetence - they have an idea that they think they know what it is all about, so they think they are doing something well without really know what they are doing - many times being reinforced in this belief that they know what they are doing because someone laughs at what they do.

* confirmation bias (recognising only data that supports your hypothesis)
* selective perception (seeing what you want to see)

Connie... Thanks for the tip... of the iceberg.
