John:
Your site looks great! That was done with free software? I just checked out the BlueVoda site but it says that in order to publish you have to have a hosting account with them. Does that mean it's basically useless unless you use them for hosting? Or can you create it and publish elsewhere? If it's the latter I'll try it out - it's a really nice site.

Thanks Craig. I'm new to the website building thing but it's great to learn new things. The forums at Blue Voda are very helpful for someone like me that has no idea of how to do this! _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Hi Melissa,
Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure about that. I just downloaded the software just to play around with it and one thing led to another. I ended up using them for everything. I think it was around $20 for the domain name and around $6.00 a month for them to host it. I went with the full three years to keep the cost down.
Good Luck,

That gives you more freedom and flexibility if you decide down the road that you'd like to use a different host, for whatever reason. Some registrars have been known to hold a domain hostage or at least take their sweet time if you want to move your hosting. |
I second that, Don! I've changed hosts (presently with Bluehost) several times in the past and going this route has saved me MANY headaches since I can change the DNS info myself quickly and easily to the new host's DNS by simply logging into my registrar's control panel (Network Solutions).
Good thinking.
PEACE.

Hmmm.... If I CAN'T do that myself (change theDNS) and have to wait for the reseller to do it (not sure if I can or not) can I switch my domains to a registrar that will allow me to control that myself? How would I do that? |

Changing domain registrars is very easy. When you sign up with a new registrar, they take care of everything. All you'll have to do (usually) is answer the email you'll get asking if you authorized the switch. Many folks really like GoDaddy. A while back I moved all my registrations to NameCheap and have been very happy with them. This page explains a bit more about the transfer process, but it will be similar no matter whom you may switch to. There are many from which to choose, and the only one I would recommend against using is Network Solutions.
Anthony, maybe you have a different experience, but I've heard many horror stories about troubles when attempting to switch registration away from Network Solutions. They are among the highest cost registrars and evidently they make it very very difficult to move a domain away from them. And to be truthful, if you never have to switch registrars, I guess the point is moot. |

I took John's advice and started playing with Blue Voda. Actually, my wife took over and has been creating like mad for the last couple of days. She was searching Blue Voda coupons and came across a blog about the hosting issues when using their software. The blog said if you change to a different host you cannot transfer your pages. In other words what you create with their software can only be used if you stay with them as host.
Is that common in the industry with other host's software?
I guess it's logical. If they provide you free design software, they wouldn't want you taking your business elsewhere. On the other hand, is it worthwhile to pay a designer and be able to choose whatever host you want?
Opinions please?

Craig,
If you have a complete backup of the data from your blog (not the blog software but the content you've posted) you can probably find a way to move your blog to a different site. _________________ Be well,

I'm not sure I would say the domain transfer process is "easy" as ALL registrars seem to make it difficult and, for somebody who isn't used to the process, it seems like a lot of pain-in-the-butt steps. I would definitely agree that Network Solutions is both overpriced and is about as willing to let you go as AOL is with their subscribers.
And even GoDaddy has stuff a little bit buried.
Plus, different registrars impose different buffer periods...time close to the expiration of a domain when they don't allow it to be transferred out, which is one of the biggest problems I have with NetSol because at one point it was 60 days...ludicrous if you ask me.
That said, the domain transfer process almost always works flawlessly (although not always) so long as you follow the steps and give it enough time.
The bigger problem, by far, is having somebody who isn't trustworthy register your domain for you, because if your domain is registered in somebody else's name, and they a) don't want you to go bye-bye or b) they themselves have gone bye-bye, then prepare to waste a tremendous amount of time trying to get your domain back.
I've had a couple clients change their domain name or change the name of their business because they couldn't get control of their own domain name. Ouch.
My company registers the vast majority of our clients' domains in our name (we're listed as the registrant), however, we will make any change to domain data or DNS for any client for free at any time. It's their domain, and the reason we do it the way we do it is precisely TO make it easier. We would never, however, hold a domain hostage.
Unfortunately, a great many other companies are less easy going about it...as if holding somebody's domain hostage is going to "win back" a client ready to leave in the first place. _________________ Lou Zucaro

This proprietary bidness is only for stuff using a site's build-it-yourself architecture. Anything that is created offsite and uploaded can be put into ANY hosting setup. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

What Deebs said.
Which, depending on the situation, mind you, isn't always a bad thing. It all depends on what you want and what your priorities are. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Hello All,
My name is Michael Flowers and I am new to the boards but not new to VO.
I've been "in business" now for about a year. By in business I mean getting paid for VO. I'd always read at church, outloud to kids and stuff, but now I make money doing it, it's awesome.
I also happen to be a web guru.
My desire has always been to help people succeed. I've had a lot of help from people in my past and that has definitely helped shape my future.
I want to help you build a great site! First thing's first, check out my VO page to see what the sites I build look like.
I can build you that same kind of site for around 100 dollars. That INCLUDES your domain and hosting for the first year. Try to find that bargain anywhere else and I bet you won't.
Second, check out my website for website arranging. I call myself a web arranger because I don't design the site from the ground up, I use free CSS templates from across the internet to build very effective sites for EVERYONE, not just VO people.
Please contact me at michael@gudsites.com if you are interested in my website services.
Please visit my intro post or my website (listed above) where I talk more about my VO career.
Thanks for considering my services!
Sincerely,
Michael Flowers

Welcome Michael!
Just FYI, on your homepage you have a link to see other sites on the word "these" and that link is broken (page not found / 404 error).
Also on your Demos page on your v.o. site, the page takes over a minute to load on a 12mb cable connection...you may want to check your Flash players and make sure they have the audio set to stream rather than load.
If you look around in some of the other forums, you should also find code for getting rid of the 'hit spacebar or click to use this control' message for Flash in IE.
Just trying to help make your sites a little gud-er _________________ Lou Zucaro
