I love it!
well, a couple of years ago I was working on a museum project with a bunch of folks down in New York City. It was a long-range project that had me working with a talented group of artists, designers, etc. We'd have these meetings where everybody would chime in with their ideas about how a given exhibit piece (both AV and still photography) should look. More than once I wanted to break out in song:
"Everybody wants to be an art DI-rector!!!" _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Wow, this thread was doomed from the start. One of the more aggressive threadjacks in recent history. _________________ Donovan

You know, I actually have a question on the SUBJECT of this thread, but I'm afraid no one would see it.
Has anyone ever been "the voice" of a museum? Meaning the voice of all the kiosks, etc...? I'm curious how you would charge for that kind of work. By the completed hour? Package deal? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Maybe a package deal to start (based on the initial volume of work) plus an agreement for an ongoing per-word fee would make sense.
The reason I say this is that there's probably a bunch of stuff to do initially, then smaller scripts moving forward. So a per-hour rate for that secondary material might not be granular enough to make billing sensible. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Well...the JFK Museum in Dallas has those headphones you put on, and a narrator takes you through the entire museum exhibit by exhibit....you have the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward the narration. It was really well done....
As far as who it was or how much he would have charged for such a job...no idea. _________________ Moe Egan

First of all - minor thread threadjack - the JFK museum was a great example of a multimedia rich experience - hours disappeared.
Secondly - for something as high profile as that museum, I think that an agent was likely involved in the project. We need to encourage an agent or two to frequent this board and offer guidance and insight. _________________ Playing for a living...

| I think Connie is dead on as far as the higher profile work - an agent probably would be involved. That does not mean that you should not be on the lookout for potential projects on your own. As an additional item, there is work doing Real Estate descriptions that are transmitted near properties. |

Maybe yes, maybe no. The last museum project I worked on had a few AV narrations and the production company picked out the narrator for material that I wrote. The ProdCo knew the narrator they wanted and contacted her for the session.
When I am hired to write and produce things for museums/science centers, it's up to me to find the narrator (or supply the narration myself), unless the specific museum/sci/ctr has someone in mind already. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

I particularly like the headphone tour at Ellis Island.
RE: real estate... yeah... that may not be the most robust industry at the moment. I don't know about the rest of the country, but around here (FL) the industry is just about non-existent at the moment. I know realtors that are now admin assistants and dogsitters. And those that are still in the biz aren't really spending much on marketing. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

dogsitting sounds pretty good! woof!
we've been 'round these parts on real estate and presumed consensus is it ain't worth sheeot to pursue that avenue as realtors just aren't going to play with us, especially in this downturn.
but pat, if you find otherwise, more power to you and do let us know! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I agree with Diane. Realtors are notoriously cheap and all of the ones I've approached see no value in having a pro do their talking house. They'd prefer to do it themselves. _________________ Jeff

| I do a ton of real estate tours. They pay beer money. Since I don't drink beer, it adds up. |
