The advice that came with my Neti Pot (and that I've read online) regarding using your own salt is to choose a non-iodized sea salt that does not contain an anti-caking agent (the anti-caking agent, usually calcium silicate, purportedly will cause a burning sensation).
I've used La Baleine with success and that brand seems to be widely available, at least in my area. It's under $3 for a 26.5 ounce container at the supermarket (just make sure you get the fine-ground salt or it will take forever to dissolve).
Here's what the container looks like:

I would also like to give props to La Baleine, but for cooking. I use the Morton Coarse Kosher Salt for a lot of stuff, but the La Baleine fine crystals salt has a similar taste and is great to put in a shaker on the table, or when you need to not use coarse salt for some reason. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Just make sure those big kosher crystals are fully dissolved. Don't want to exfoliate your sinuses. |

| Excuse me, Tom, but Lou was making a graceful transition from the original topic of this post, to food. I think it is rather crass to try to get back on topic. |

| It's obvious I need some remedial threadjack training. Pardon my indiscretion. |

I didn't realize you were supposed to mix the ingredients before you poured them in. I was dumping the salt and then a couple of Alka-Seltzer in my nose then using the pot. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Through your nose?
That's not an approved neti-pot usage...

Ah - the graceful gentle pouring of liquid...seems so tranquil.
I use the plastic bottle with the pre-measured packets - you can really squirt the stuff in using that baby! _________________ Playing for a living...

Do you try to make it come out your tear ducts that way, Connie?
Kosher salt mixed into warm water here as well. Rarely have to do it anymore, but when I have to, it does the trick. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Walgreen's near my house has the Sinu-cleanse 60 count saline packets. Works for me. _________________ Bobbin Beam

No, you're supposed to tilt your head back, squeeze in the lime juice, snort the salt, then smoke the pot. Wait. What?
Heh, I go away for a week, forgetting to post about my balloon sinuplasty treatments, and missed all the naked-and-drunk posts! D'oh! Hate missing good joke fodder. |
