I would be surprised if that was the case. The more likely explanation is that you don't have write permissions to the server you are trying to upload to.

it's weird, but that's the way i regard ftp sites. sometimes they work for me, other times not.

i did a test on wednesday for this client, uploaded to her site, no problem. i used IE, which shows a blank page to which i can create a unique folder and into which i can load files

in firefox, i can see a higher directory, see folders of all manner, but can't load to any existing ones or create a new one.

today, in IE, i can't load because, indeed, i AM denied permission.

in the firefox help section contents, this is the only verbiage about ftp, my search term:

A standard that allows users to transfer files from one computer to
another over a network. You can use Firefox to fetch files
using FTP.

and so, perhaps my question here is merely one to underscore what firefox tells me in this most detailed response to my query Exclamation

If you are trying to upload/download ftp files, you need to use filezilla from firefox.
It's a free software and works like a charm:
http://filezilla-project.org/
Get the client version.

thanks, claire--i'll check out that.

the issue i'm having is that the ftp site provided by the client won't allow me access, but only in IE am i prompted to that end. in firefox, i simply have no recourse for uploading. so ... filezilla might be the missing link (heh.)? i don't know since i haven't investigated but thanks again for the bata.

filezilla is the missing link (I think).
You are trying to access the ftp server directly and you need the software.
I've never had a problem since I started using it.
Let us know if it solves your problem. Smile

Filezilla isn't required to access FTP sites (unless you mean that it's required if you're surfing with Firefox)

In Windows, you can use the Windows Explorer (Start > All Programs > Accessories) and type the FTP address & credentials into the address field.

Free, built-in FTP client and it works great.

In case you're not sure how to enter credentials without a "setup" or pop-up dialog, FTP works like this:

ftp://username:password@ftp.site.com

So if your username is maggipinto and your password is vino and you're uploading to ftp.myclient.com, you'd type this:

ftp://maggipinto:vino@ftp.myclient.com

Easy peasy Smile

I see that filezilla has been mentioned.

For those wishing to have a bit more power at their fingertips when using FTP, WS_FTP is a great tool.

I'm too much of a curmudgeon to swap from it after all these years.

Claire, Thanks for the Filezilla info! That was the program I loaded to Unbuntu yesterday and it works great.

If one isn't required, then just leave out those bits Smile

If one is required and you don't have them, then there's nothing you can do to make it work, regardless of which program you use.

You shouldn't be allowed to upload to an ftp site with any ftp client without a username and password. Such open ftp sites long ago got overrun with people trading commercial software illegally.
