Doing an audio book for a customer that includes a form letter relating to a submission a doctor has made to two judges. As a way to indicate how he wrote basically the same letter to two different judges endorsing the treatment for two different patients, the book has the letter written riddled with slashes. Most times I can slip in an "or" or some other word, but because there are so many, it just sounds clunky to me. I don't know if I want to actually vocalize "slash" either. Here's some of the text.

Dear Judge Reynolds/Byron:
I am writing to you on behalf of my patient, Ms. Tenisha L. Scott / Ms. Hannah P. Wells, who has been in psychiatric treatment in my practice for three months.
It is my clinical assessment that Ms. Scott's / Ms Wells's shoplifting is consistent with kleptomania, insofar as it does not .....
Rather, Ms. Scott's / Ms. Wells's shoplifting stems from an anxiety-ridden drive to steal.....

Recommendations / ideas / suggestions?

I suggest you consult the author, especially before you add any words like "or".

Between just say in your head "beat", in other words take a pause for a beat and ensure the inflection on both names is the same.

Since this is based on a declaration made for legal purposes (even though it's now used in an audio book), I'm with Jeff.

Ask the author... the message being sent could be changed by the inclusion or omission of a few words.

/had a horrifying experience when a lawyer changed the wording of a forensic analysis of a computer HDD a few years back.

Jeff,
You are correct sir. I did call his office but was unable to get a hold of him. I'll try again Monday.

Philip,
This is exactly how I resolved it for today. I made sure I kept the same inflection for each name and just gave a beat between names. I felt this way I'm not altering the text at all, merely reading it as written which is always the best default when a question comes up. I'll verify that with the author when I get a hold of him.

Thanks all. Sometimes I just need a sounding board to add to the voices in my head. This is the default location on the net for me.

Bob,

Philip's suggestion is how it sounded in my head when I read your text above. I quite agree with his comment. Of course, once you hear from the author, that will settle the matter.

Assuming I couldn't get ahold of the client, I'd just read each chunk twice...once with each name.
