Sorry folks, just had to show them off. It's not as pricey as Kgenus's stuff, but for those who play around in the studio, these are true beauts Wink

/and I'm not talking about the M-610... though with the minor mods, that thing is pretty smoking too

Thanks to Adam from Mercenary for showing these off to me (rat bastage... you knew I'd get them). And to Jonathan Little for coming up with these wild preamps.

I have to say that I wasn't sure what to expect of them when I first heard them. But being able to use a transformer, to install an additional transformer, to use an external transformer, or just go transformerless piqued my interest.

Then you have the phase and LF resonance tools which are part of the package (I spent a full week playing with those). Yummy.

When I oversaturated the transformer and the VO track attacked nicer than all but one of my tube preamps (and it was on the same par with that one) I fell in love.

Now I just need two more... just because Wink

For a dynamic mic, I can't go too insane (but I should)! Three price ranges:

1.) Under $1000 - not particularly interested in the lower end...say $600 and up.
2.) $1000-$1500 This is realistically my limit considering the other purchases I see in my crystal ball.
3.) $1500-$2000

Thanks for your response. I agree that a good pre is a good pre; and if anything, a dynamic mic screams out for a really great preamp.

It's looking more and more like either the Great River or the Hardy, both of which I've test-driven.

I'm currently running a Rode NTK through a dbx286a, but am considering upgrading to a Great River... haven't tried one out yet but have heard a lot of really good things about them. Is there a night-and-day difference? And would the 2-channel be of any more use to me than the 1-channel if I'm just running one mic?

Both are good preamps, and widely used in the VO world.

Of the two, I prefer the Hardy on most voices for it's ability to stand out of a mix.

If you get the chance, test out the LMNOPre and compare the three. I'll admit that I love the things, but I bought my first one a year ago and liked it enough to get a second.

And enough to start looking at getting two more.

It's very Great River sounding when the transformer is used (the stock transformer that is, you can install a second transformer of your choosing or externally use one), But can become as colorful as the Hardy or as clean as an Avalon (minus the HF). Much like my "go to" compressors and EQs, it's very versitile, which is why I like it.

Right now the top three preamps for VO in my mind are the Great River, the Hardy, and the Little Labs. I just preferred the Little Labs, but you won't go wrong with any of the three.

The important thing though is to spend time with any and all of the choices on your list. I did when I did my mic shootout and found what I considered to be a hidden gem. Gear is funny that way... sometimes you find just what you need, when you aren't looking for it. Bitchin

Just post some clips when you get your preamp... I love hearing the sounds people put together with their recording chains.
