Hello one and all!!! I have a quick question about something that actually may not exist. Is there some form of standardized non-union rate card out there somewhere? Obviously rates have to be somewhat fluid in this day and age for most of us, but it would be nice to reference an industry standard to start the bidding. Wink

I don't know of any widely used non-union rate card, but I know a lot of folks use the union rate cards as guidance in their pricing. The union rate for a radio spot here in Phoenix is about $233 plus a pension and welfare payment. Local talent agencies get $250 for their non-union talent, so clients pay about the same whichever way they go.

To date, I have not come accross a non-union rate card. It would be amost impossible to manage! However, using the union rate sheets as a guidline will help you... attempt to stay close to them, be flexible enough to get yourself work, but keep in mind, working for $40 doesn't really do you or the industry as a whole any good!

I personally like this... "I'd rather turn down the low paying clients and go after the high paying clients! I'll work less, make more and live happier!" That being said, you have to start somewhere...

I wouldn't suggest using Voice123 or Interactive Voices as a guide for the going rates in v/o these days.

In the search feature at the top of the bulletin board page, type in rates and see what comes up... there is a boutiful assortment of information, some useful, some not, and some just very humerous!

As far as I'm aware there is no such thing so a bit of market research is probably the way ahead.

We've had jobs brought to our attention from $5 for short clips to $25 for 15 minutes worth of audio. On a site called Radiodaddy the going rate is a big fat Zero.

The union rate card is not a bad bench mark especially when you bear in mind most union voices don't have any work either. I quite like the idea of us all being unemployed at the same rates.

A non-union rate card would be VERY generic... even if one existed. There are way too many factors that would affect the final rate. I would think that your local and experience are two big factors to consider. Somewhat off the subject... if you have ever seen a Federal Civil Service GS pay rate card, the GS rates are the same nationwide... but they also list the locality pay differential for each area. Therefor... the same rate of GS-11 may pay a few dollars less per hour in Ohio than in California. In VO work, small markets would pay less than big markets... all things being equal. But then again... if there are thousands of hungry VO artist located near the big market areas, the clients may be inclined to lower their budget.
That's my opinion... opinions of others may vary.

If I'm at a loss in negotiations and I have to name a figure, I tell them the rate for that kind of gig in my own market and ask what it is in theirs.
