I have been bumped from my gig with the SX Season Review in favor of a "young and hip" sound... (sigh).
Management of the production decided they wanted something which was more exciting. I just hate growing old.
Oh well, Now there is no need for you to watch the show on Sunday May Fifth IF you were going to hear me doing the season review.
Guess I will have to put on my Merlin hat and grow younger ... and hipper.

If you've run out of ideas, replace someone! Playing the hip and tendy card is very lame indeed. In the UK, E4 is the TV channel for the young n hip. Until 2006 the station promo voice was Patrick Allen, the audience loved him and his last session for the company was at the age of 82. Patrick didn't get booted, he died. The voice of E4 is now Peter Dickson, Peter is a yoofull 50 something.
I'm 48 and most of the TV promo producers with whom I have the pleasure of working are 20 somethings. I'm old enough(ish) to be their father! LONG LIVE THE FAT BALD OLD MAN!!! |

Don Pardo is around 150 years old and still does SNL. So obviously their logic is flawed. _________________ Jeff

I did a big narration project for a client today playing four different realistic characters, each giving a three minute or so monologue about this senior center: two residents in their 70's, the son of a resident about 48, and the marketing manager of the place, a gent in his 30's. Seniors...fine, loved 'em. 48 year old...I made 'em cry, like I was supposed to.
"OK, for the 30 something we want him youthful and energetic." So I give them the dynamo-Tony-Robbins (!!!) kind of approach but younger and take all the gravel out of my voice. And I'm dancing around getting all Italian with my hands. Taadaaah! I finish and wait like two minutes for them to hit the talk-back button....."Ahh, that was nice, but we need it a lot younger and much more energy." Uh huh. Well, in my head I made him 20 something and hopped up on caffeine drinks, and my shirt was soaked after just 3 or 4 minutes, and they accepted it, but I think my days of playing 30 something may be fading into the sunset.
Sigh.
F 'em, Frank. F' em. I'll meet you out back for a snort.

I agree 100% with Deirdre! Their loss dear Frank.
I was replaced by a younger girl (keep in mind, I'm only 31) for a dealership I had been doing their on-camera spots for for a year. I was bummed.
But, guess what? She wasn't able to carry the spots and I was asked back a month later. We are still going strong! So, ya never know! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Yeah, those blackguards should be scalped, Kara.
I hit the "can't play 30" long ago in my stage career, so I guess I'm already over it.
I remember my dismay when I began to re-invigorate my radio career after a long hiatus being a full-time mom. All these "childish-sounding" girls on the radio! What gives?!? I thought. I worked so hard on achieving a mature sound in the 70's and 80's because that's all anyone wanted. 10 years out of the stream and all the rules had changed.
As my pal Ray the Marine Master Sergeant sez, "You gotta roll with the punches or they'll beat the sh1t outta ya." _________________ DBCooperVO.com

One of my agents sent a couple of auditions today - and after reading the scripts, I wrote back the following:
Quote: | This project* feels like a younger sound than I have – what do you think? I’ll work on the other one you sent though. |
(* it was for a hair care item)
Perhaps I could have gone where the producer wanted, but perhaps I just didn't want to - and there are plenty of younger voiced women who will fit the bill.
Today I was the voice of a mom whose "four boys" had flown the coop. While I am not a mom, I do play one on the radio! _________________ Playing for a living...

As much as I'm sorry Frank lost some work, this isn't an "unfair" situation. Age affects all of us and the types of spots we do. I'm not a kid, so I can't to prepubescent stuff anymore. I'm also not "old", so I can't do grandfatherly type of roles, yet. I fit squarely into the 20-40 year old range. And that will change as I get older. Frank's an astute guy. I'm sure that while this door may be closing, he's got many more opening for him. _________________ Jeff

The funny thing about this situation is I had been speaking with Diane Maggipinto on the cell phone just before being interrupted with the call from the producer. I had mentioned to Miss D., I would be out of town for a few days during the event.
Hey, I just laughed when I received the call. I mentioned that he (the producer) would likely be back and asked; "What other shows do you have getting ready for air"?
Turns out that CBS is letting a lot of people go lately. This is not a "bad" thing; it is just a - thing.
More networks, more commercials, more fun are waiting... Ya' gotta love this biz or you do not stay in as long as I have stayed being a VO artiste'.
