Have you signed up for VOICE 2008 yet? If not, you'll come across this caveat in the application process:

Your thoughts are welcome.

I took it to mean that if we are brought up to read on mic during a session (as with 2007), that our voice might appear on the CD-ROM that is sold after the event.

They also had cameras in 2007 roaming around getting feedback, and the testimonials are on the website.

I could be wrong, but that is my impression.

Pretty standard sort of agreement when attending these things, isn't it?

It appears to mean exactly what it implies. There are no gray areas. Every person who buys a ticket is fair game.

Personally, I feel that the benefits outweigh the risks.

It's tough to sign that if you're a print model.

Same as last year. Fairly standard stuff, methinks.

Just don't get too drunk in front of the cameras. You might end up on YouTube.

Tara said it right. Occasionally atendees in VOICE 2007 were asked to read scripts for instructords to teach a point and the recording may have been used on their CD-ROM. I can't imagine someone wanting $ for their voice while they're threre to learn. But that's just me...

I can. The venue is irrelevant. The intended usage (i.e. for them to make money off your voice) is.

Well, I had two problems when I read this, the first being the potentially broad range of productions our appearances could be sold into. I understand releasing your image and voice for a wrap-up DVD of the event, but I'm not sure how many of us would enjoy being featured in a totally separate voice training video for James or anyone else he cares to sell the video to. Secondly, the line that in essence says "If you don't like the idea of us selling your appearance to anybody we want to, don't sign up or show up."

I've signed dozens of those "we can use your appearance throughout the Universe until kingdom comes" kind of releases, but they're for a commercial that'll be worthless in a year or two, or for a movie or TV show with very limited possibilities beyond the original purpose. This stuff.....I don't know any of that.

Plus, there's that thing called "tact". I just like using it and seeing it where possible.

Organisers "We've added value to this event and will charge you over $600 to derive some benefit."

Participants "You who add value to the event and any sell-through products may not charge the organisers."

I have no problem with the clause because I will not be attending.

The Solution

Don't Speak, Wear Sun Glasses, and Don't get caught in the wrong place with the wrong person.

My wife told me this true story about a woman she knew. This happened in the days before cell phones with cameras.

The woman had taken a trip to Russia in late December to go to a conference of some type. She told her husband that she would be home after New Years. All was good until the husband saw her and another man dancing on New Years Eve ( on national TV) to the music of the Guy Lombardo Band, (in New York City) she told him she was going to be in Russia on New Years Eve.

I guess what happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas, but all bets are off for LA. Smile

I've not signed up for the con yet, so I hadn't seen that.

I think I'm going to email/call them just to clarify. I do realize it's a standard agreement, but personally, I certainly wouldn't want my voice to be used on some before/after type of training CD... with my voice being the before. Smile I guess you could just opt not to get up to the mic though.

In Vegas, people were chosen to go up on mic through a raffle drawing. I'm not sure how it will be done in LA- but if it is the same, you could opt not to add your name to the drawing. Just make sure to find out which is the prize bin- there were some great prizes in Vegas!

Anyone ever read the back of a ticket to a ball game? Ever gone to a amusement park? Heck, most museums have this posted on their front doors. This is mainly to cover crowd shots, so they don't have to go around and get release forms from everyone. If you don't want to read in front of the crowd, then don't. The people I feel who might be getting the shaft are the presenters. Unless they have a contract covering any future residuals.
