Ah, the RI accent...where Brooklyn meets Southie.
A bit of RI, but especially Fawrivvah/Noobiffid is prone to horrible mumbling. I did a shoot for Yomega with local talent down there and we lost a lot of takes due to a general inability to convey American English words orally. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Okay, so when I moved here lo these many (11) yeahs ago, I was mystified, nay, even STUMPED at some of the words I heard. But I figured them out and now I can sling some of them, but my Boston's SO not wicket pissah.
here's my list and translations:
bubblah (drinking fountain)
howwaahyah (how are you?)
yah not frahm arand heyah ah ya (danged non-Yankee)
I need a quaddah (give me twenty-five cents)
she's a wicket pissah (no, it doesn't mean she pees on fences)
ya need a laahyah (one of those guys who passed da bah)
ya get yah food at the stah mahket (a grocery store named Star Market)
wantchowda? (clab chowdah, ya bam)
just go stand on the cawna (but don't show any leg, especially if it's the Combat zone)
ah ya shuah? (as sure as I'm gonna get baby)
Wheah ya fram? (they don't really have to ask, especially if you don't have the accent, see "yah not fram arand heah, ah yah?")
My address is Fah Foddy Dot Ave (in Dahchestah, no doubt)
Wanna frappe? (Contrary to how it sounds, this is not a lewd invitation, although it does involve shaking milk...)
How wah yah? (They're asking because they want to know...)
Pibbity (that town named after Sherman's dog)
Woostah (not the same as the shire sauce)
Ayuh (the town next to Groton) (or, in Maine: a term of agreement)
Lemstah (another town along Route 2, sometimes called Leominster)
Off to get some clam bellies...

Heard recently in the Union Oyster House in Baaastan:
"Pack, paddy a six...Pack paddy a six", I didn't realize she was saying our table was ready.

Craig, yes, it's true that you can undergo a name change when you move here. My DH is named Mark... but now his name is "Maahk"...
almost sounds like a duck with a harelip... _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
