I was talking with a friend who recently had something removed from the back of his hand. He'd had a sore and noticed that it wasn't healing. After about a month, he went to get it checked out. The doctor immediately recognized it and the biopsy confirmed that it was a precancerous growth... luckily it was caught early and he should have no problems with it, but still something to think about as we get ready to spend more time outdoors in the spring and summer... if you see something and it doesn't look right, you might want to get it looked at just to be safe.

Chris, you are so right. I can tell you first hand (no pun intended). In my case it was a slightly bigger birthmark, that suddenly got darker and changed form a bit when I was 12. It was removed the next day. This is your warning sign for something that can easily go beyond medical cure. You can't ignore the risks that are out there, especially if you enjoy sunbathing. Over here in the Dutch Caribbean sometimes the ultraviolet rays are indexed over the mark 10 or even 11. In Holland they would already be nervous when the mark reaches 8...

A high UV-index means that untreated exposure of over 12 minutes per day is a serious threat to your skin. Sometimes even 9-10 minutes is the absolute maximum... all the tourists from Northern Europe (like my home country The Netherlands) however booked a "sun vacation" and ignore the things me and my collegues transmit on the radiostations. They totally not understand that there's no comparison of living 52-something degrees above the equator, or being THIS close to the equator as we are here in the Antilles... just a couple of degrees.

Not meant as a cautionary tale to scare the crowds, just a friendly reminder that the sun plays nasty tricks on your body sometimes. People getting severe 1st and sometimes even 2nd degree burns from the sun, not to mention suffering a sunstrike//sunstroke/sunstruck (help me, my English...) is more of a rule than it is an exception. Just don't try mother nature... she was there before us and will definately be there when we are long gone.

I can't agree more with the above sentiments. Mine were just rough dry patches on my face. Easily removed with Freon. The dermatologist gave me some cream to apply as well. It triggers the body's own immune system.

Only a couple of places were stubborn but all are gone now. I have an indoor job so I don't get into the sun much except for lawn work and football games (I wear sun screen for both) but my doc advised me to wear sun screen even when I am going to be in the car. Never thought about the amount of sun exposure you get when driving.

It's a bright world. Just be careful out there.

My son is a PA/Dermatologist. He keeps harping on me... "Wear sunscreen and wear a hat".
I've had lots a freon stuff done to me, and been cut on a few times.
I thought those with a fair complexion were more at risk, but I guess the sun can do a job on just about anybody.
