Did you guys have "ice houses" out that way, too? No one outside of San Antonio knew what the heck those were.

Ice house? It's either a bar or where they cut up meat...not sure.

I just listened to the completely uber-hot Barry Bostwick narrate a Carl Hiiasen story in which he pronounced "anniversary" as "anniVERSHery".

Yoiks!

My peeve of peeves, and the thing that has made to TURN OFF NPR in the morning is the pronunciation of the word ending "ING" as "EEN".

Good Lord.

dang it, I hate typos, too.

Kara: Ice House = Convenience Store.

Maybe it was just local to Helotes. Hmmm...

The one that drives me crazy is the latest Wilford Brimley for a medical supply company saying dia-uh-bee-tus all the way through. Except for the tag, obviously recut, because he says the name of the American Diabetes Association correctly. ADA must've insisted! (Thank goodness.)

So I go looking for the clip. Didn't find it, but I thought this was funny.

Mary,

Evidently there are parts of the country where that's the common pronunciation. My mom says die-uh-beet-us. Drives me crazy.

I'm not sure if this is still true, but there was a trend at The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford to deliberately shlush the 's' sound. Whether it was an affectation or a suggested pronunciation I'm not sure, but it irritated me beyond belief. I find it very difficult to believe that it would have been suggested to them. Someone once told me that someone once told them (stay with it) that it sounded less sharp and spikey and that a 'sh' was more sensual on the ear.

You still hear it on radio plays....if you are really unlucky.
