I'm on your Side Deirdre.
Hell, I was getting confused there for a minute.
I find this an excellent and stimulating exchange, and I take not offense in such back and forth banter. Deirdre is obviously a well educated person with a love for the English language as myself, and I'm sure the rest of us in this "craft of voice and word" do as well. I hope no ill regard was directed at me.
Errors in usage are a lot like errors in table manners. There are tiny deviations from standard practice few people will notice or care about, like using your salad fork to eat stake, or using "decimate" to mean "destroy." Saying "I got my dandruff up" rather then "my dander" is more like trying to stab chunks of sweet and sour pork with a sharpened end of a chopstick- likely to raise eyebrows. But it's the equivalent of falling face first into the mashed potatoes when some poor soul refers to a man as "circusized." _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

with assistance from a chain saw 'stead of a butter knife?
catching up here this morning and i admit--this type of thread is one of my favorite components of the board. hooray!
makes me crazy: a whole nother
ice house? never heard of it as convenience store, but some of us round here like to say sh*t house as a descriptor for, uh, getting upset.
my grandmother said ice box for refrigerator. or she used the term frigidaire.
bruce, interesting about jimmy carter. difference is, he didn't shock and awe EYE-rack. arrrgh.
and regarding point in time: isn't that redundant?
which reminds me of another sh*thouse moment: and as well we also went to the ice house, too. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I don't think so. "Time" can refer to either a specific chronological marker ("What time is it?") or the broad spectrum of all time ("'til the end of time"). In the phrase "at that point in time," the broader use of "time" is applied, and it's the inclusion of "point" that makes the entire phrase -- not the word "time" -- refer to something specific. What gets confusing is that you can drop either "point" or "time" from the phrase and retain the same meaning as the whole phrase, which is why it might seem redundant at first glance. _________________ Justin S.
