Well deserved victories by Mary and Moe, and I really enjoyed listening to what everyone brought to the table.
If Phil "Shakey" Banks ever wants to get away from it all, I do reckon he could move to the deep south, immerse hisself in that there method of pronouncing things and rise from the ashes as a much successful Southern vo. Just re-member to put the emphasis on the first syllable when-ever possible (even in Ju-ly) and replacing the "s" with a "d" or oh-mittin' it allstogether helps too. Thank-you all for the kind words and to Philip for another wonderful challenge.
Travis, you make a good point, and I would not advocate investing tremendous amounts of time in learning dialects with the sole aim of getting voice-over dialect work. However if you have a good foundation, e.g., early exposure to a variety of regional voices, long study of languages, or whatever, and you love it, it’s worth doing for its own sake and because it improves your ear, AND – I’ve said this before, there is a demand for it in the audio book industry.
I have put a lot of time into it for the above reasons and get work as a result. Some of it is character voices - e.g., Miss Melberry, an animated Australian girl, Miss Lizzy, a lizard with a Georgia accent – both for an educational software program, the British spokesperson, “Piper” for AuctionPal, to name a few; some of it is serious, like the voice of an Afghani mother for a documentary, a Texas housewife for an art documentary, a Peruvian-accented narrator for another art film, and recently was invited to audition for a museum project on immigration using 6 different European and Central American accents as well as an on-camera British role (it will be a while before I hear back about these). The one of which I’m most proud was for the UK office of one of my U.S. clients. I didn’t know the script called for a British accent until it arrived and after the work was completed I fully expected to get an email saying sorry, not approved you imposter. But, it was accepted.
So, depending on your ear and how much you enjoy it and how much work you’re willing to put into it, it can pay off. For me, it is the most fun of all. And Miss Moe you should definitely be doing more of it! |

I completely agree with Travis,
Travis wrote: | dialects that aren't your own are not something you're usually hired for - there's always a desperate actor close-by who's a native speaker... | But being a simpleton I took that thought process to its illogical limits and haven't been going after ANY VO work that requires accents, dialects, character developed voices. And anything else you don't use for a while, it weakens (or your confidence in that skill weakens)...so the cycle of non use continues....does that make sense?
I'm now working on my very first audio book...and I've given myself permission (with help from the teachings of Bob Bergen and Pat Fraley) to really let the character's voices come alive...and I'm having the time of my life. I love learning and mimicing accents - I've always had an ear for it. But I know I could never pass myself off as a "native speaker"....but then again....did Natasha Fatal sound like an actual native speaking Russian? No, but she rocked.
I guess I just made it over a little career speed bump - giving myself permission to have fun and play with ALL my voices ..even the ones who ain't Merican. _________________ Moe Egan

Mary and Moe,
Congrats to both of you! I would have had a tough time choosing between the two of your reads myself, so the co-winners idea worked out great. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Ya beat me to the board Mary! Yes indeed - an elegant European sweet treat (I mean the choccies, not Mr. Banks himself!) arrived at Casa de Moe Moe yesterday.
I let each of the offspring and hubby select ONE chocolate- the rest in their beautiful wooden box, I have squirreled away to savor solo. These are the most amazing chocolates I've ever tasted! I feel like Charlie Bucket!
We as a community are very lucky and privileged to have such an encouraging, insightful, experienced ...and at times curmudgeonly sage as Mr. Banks in our midsts. And that's for more than just the choccies Banksey! _________________ Moe Egan
