Mike - thank you for doing this! I think this kind of workout is absolutely invaluable, even for and old-timer like me. Since I almost always audition for VO from my home studio, I'm my only critic. I very much appreciate other opinions.

It's a good thing I had that extra cup of coffee this morning.

Here's a link to download my MP3 take on this script: http://tinyurl.com/5x76ca

By the way, tinyurl is GREAT! The original link address was 134 characters long, and tinryurl.com reduced it to 25.

Maybe applying tinyurl to the copy will help.... Wink

I actually had a situation recently where there was waaaay too much copy for a :60, and of course they wanted it conversational with an easy pace. So I did it at ;60 with all the words and not at an easy pace and submitted another one with some copy removed which was at a much more easy pace. They ended up rewriting and I got paid twice Laugh

I love it when that happens...especially when they remove ONE WORD and you get paid twice Smile

Is the script a pile of sh*te? Yes! That's why it was a good warm up exercise.

I'm with Mr. B. Where's the harm? In fact, I much enjoy the opportunity to hear Tom's easy-going buddy take, Don G's unrushed matter-of-fact read (the second one), Philip's inviting confidential, Connie's classy and smooth clip, GP's engagingly chatty interpretation, and Rice's mildy sarcastic and casual delivery.
Added to critiques, suggestions, and complaints, does it all not become even more instructive than the sort of thing for which I used to pay $175/hour to a voice coach?

I mean, it's not as if anyone's going to sell a fellow VO's efforts, or pose as a big-time voice talent director, or open a VO academy and use these clips as instructional material.
That sort of thing couldn't happen. Could it?

Like Don G, I distilled the comments and reads and even came back for a second round.
It's not often one gets the chance to polish sh*te to a higher sheen.

There is background noise. It's a holiday up here. The house is full. And I wouldn't want anyone to....you know.

Try engineering documents.

They changed the image for a presentation and asked for a re-do. No copy change.

Explained it, and they still wanted new copy. Talked to the engineer who just put the original tracks back in the new presentation. Sent it off... they loved it.

*shrugs*

/yes, I was honest to the customer about it. They're a repeat client now.
//I'd like to think my honesty has part to do with that Wink

Wow, you people who can do this script in :60 must have Lance Armstrong lungs (not the same as Betty Davis eyes) to get through it without sounding like a Hoover trying to suck up a Sennheiser.

I'll give it a shot when the new FW card gets here.

Off to build lung capacity...

It's not too bad, and goodness knows I've seen much worse...but it's enough to keep one on one's toes. I naturally speak rather slowly, so uptempo reads are a challenge for me. For those with machine-gun rhythm, it's a breeze.

I worked as an engineer on spots with a talent today who was wonderful at quick reads. He was brilliant, and his natural speaking voice was lightning-paced. However, he couldn't do a leisurely relaxed read to save his life. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum...it takes all kinds.

If everyone had the same pace or pitch or rhythm it would be a dreadfully sorry world.

Well, since I dissed this thread so bad; I thought I would go ahead and revise the copy and make it bit more presentable/readable, you know; better sentence structure and such.

So here is Version Two

Still a bit fast for me personally, but it sounds more "intelligent".

Toodles

Yes, Chris I am still grumpy... and old, fat, and sassy too!
