Bob— I must ask why this is being called "residuals"—
Is it called "residuals" is someone gets a piece of the action from a film?

Here's how I responded (borrowing heavily from our own Beloved Mister Banks):

Quote:
@Blazenhozen: I'm sorry, I must apologize.
Somewhere along the lines of this conversation I must have given you the impression that it was all right to insult me.
It isn't. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Regarding training, etc. — it should be pretty obvious that "training" is not what I meant by "prep". Few people are paid to be trained, whether for programming or acting. College and coaching clearly are your own investment.
Once in an employed position, however, your work for a specific job should be compensated, yes? The people on salary are paid as they work, and yes, they have a huge investment of blood and guts and soul, time and terror as they work to create interactive entertainment that will, it is hoped, sell well and make their company money. They work beyond a salary's implication of 40 hours a week, and are rewarded on the back side when they make their goals and the game is a hit.
The actor has no salary, and no guarantees of anything but a session fee for the work that is done that day.
You ask, "Also what kind of system, do you propose to pay out residuals, every time someone buys the game he should be paid? what percentage? how often? its impossible to put a price on the aftermath sales of this game."
Well, one thing we agree on is the misuse of the term "residuals".

Quote:
To continue:
It is actually pretty easy to figure bonuses based on a percentage or on units sold.
You said "And I don't care what anyone says, voice acting is easy. "
It sure is!
It's a walk in the park to spend 4 hours barking and meowing like different breeds of dogs and cats, or coaching someone how to scream without ruining their throat, or how to sound like they are making or taking strikes in a sword fight.
Yes, my job is fun—Perhaps that's the problem. Some folks hate it when other people enjoy their work.
I'd be curious to know exactly what it is you do, Mister Pants-On-Fire.

Well, that all depends on who the "someone" is. A major star might get net or gross points. But those of us day players or middle class actors get residuals on DVD, TV broadcast, etc. If the term residual doesn't feel accurate, well, this is the common industry term. Film residuals are paid out quarterly, in March, June, September, and December. It's the residual department that sends them out. So there may be a better term for what they are, but it's the industry standard.

Man,
If I knew enough about the gaming industry, I'd chime in, but right now I'm just loving Mom's exchanges!

Oh, and MCM & 007: Nicely said too!!!!!

*Yoda, pass the popcorn!!!!*
