He'd probably attempt to low ball the moderator on the fees anyway. |

I'm glad this discussion got started, because I am writing all of this down. I may be new to the VO world, but I'm still here to try to sell myself and my talent. I never thought of doing something like that on Ebay. I'm betting, though, the reason that Bob Holland isn't making any money on Ebay is because. . .IT'S BEEN DONE. People see it and say, "Eh, why bother, I already found a better voice there a few years ago."
I do believe that Anthony is right. When it comes to marketing yourself and your talent, do whatever it takes. I know I'm not to that point just yet, as I'm still learning the finer aspects of my voice, but, when the time comes, sell sell sell.

Thanks Bruce, I am already there.... Are you coming?

I'm there. Just not everyone who needs to know, knows it yet. Still working on my bump and gri...er....targeted marketing.

Chris,
First of all, I'm not sure any of us know for certain how much or how little money Bob is making on eBay. Second, there is always a client out there --- be it a company or individual --- who has never hired voice talent before. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Sorry about that, David, I was just going by what I had read in an earlier post that he had not had any bids, and then that Anthony was already successful with Ebay. The week after next, though, since I have a whole week off work (paid vacations. . .a BENEFIT of working), I'm going to do a little direct marketing around Jackson and Hillsdale. See if anyone needs a commercial done or anything like that. I might find something. _________________ Christopher G. French

I think Anthony' original post was spot on. Although I've gotten some nifty jobs from services such as V123, I think auditioning electronically generally is a waste of time, UNLESS I have some time to kill in my work day and then it's a way of keeping my chops up. Also a good opportunity to try out different EQ settings, etc. that you wouldn't use on a job. Low ballers abound, but they usually turn out to be the clients who give you the most trouble anyway because they don't value your worth as a professional. And Charlie's right, being on Internet VO services is exposure, and you can never tell who is going to be listening out there.
There's certainly plenty of work, but now I'm considering specializing in one or two areas as a way of maximizing marketing. The question is, what brings in the most bang for the buck, and then how do I access the people who are doing it? _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Narration, for me. It's my core business. Then commercial. A little imaging to spice things up from time to time. Plus, some MOH and IVR here and there.
I was told way back when, that the bulk of a good VO trade is to go after the training and industrials work. That's certainly been the case with me. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Boy, I had no idea what reaction my initial post would receive....but it's been a great opportunity to view the various opinions of this membership
For the record, you'll note that while I was taking a shot at his rate quote, I also was applauding him for his marketing creativity. Upon closer inspection, there's even a VO company with their own Ebay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/Creative-Voice-Services
At least their rates are a bit more tolerable. I did get a chuckle with the notation under quantity that there were 100 available |

At $25 a minute, that adds up quite nicely for someone - I wonder how much goes to the talent. I usually figure a page will run between three and four minutes, depending on this, that and some other stuff - so at that rate, it could easily run $100 per page.
I'm just thinking of an eighty some page project I recently completed..... |

I usually charge $25 (Canadian) for each Hockey game that I do public address work for.

Actually Don, the hot dogs aren't too bad & the cheese burgers in my local (Starbuck, Manitoba) rink are terrific!!
Also, we've had people from Winnipeg rave about the Sunday breakfasts. Pretty good breaky for $4.50
The food in the rinks that I work in is rather good too. But depending on where I work, I do or do not get free grub, but that's a minor pitfall.

Tom - the food from concession stands is probably a lot better than it usta was. Years ago, I was the track announcer at Motor City Dragway in Detroit (Saturday - - Saturnday Night at Motor City Dragway !!). The food was free for employees, so what the heck, we ate it. Crunchy hotdog buns, what a novelty! |
