I've had pretty good luck with the fast track pro also, which you can find for under $200 now. The drivers can be a little twitchy though, so do your homework.
I really want to try out the Allen and Heath Zed 14. The USB only carries buses not individual channels, but I love A&H mixers...

I'm very happy with my M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I just downloaded the latest drivers from the M-Audio site and installed them. Plugged in my unit and I've been as happy as could be ever since.

Hello all. I've been learning a lot from this thread. Thank you!
It sounds like several of you have the mbox or similar Digidesign products.
I've heard recommendations against these for VO work because they are "overkill," the Pro Tools learning curve is steep, and it's aggravating to require purchasing a plug in to convert to mp3.
I've heard from others DD/ProTools really does produce a better sound because of better gating technology, etc.
How did you come to prefer your Digidesign systems? Have you really noticed a sound quality difference? Are there other arguments for choosing Digidesign?

I use an ART Tube USB pre and like it. Simple and clean. Adober Audition runs with it flawlessly with ASIO4ALL.

Jeff - I'm using the Art Tube SP USB, also. Sounds ridiculously good for 100 bucks!! You don't have to spend much on good equipment these days.

I hate to disappoint.
Though since I've often stated that "it ain't the gear" that makes a VO good, I fail to see your point.
(especially since 10 years ago you'd have paid a lot more than $100 for the type of equipment, and it wouldn't have been something small enough that you can toss in a laptop bag)
Can you do more with higher-end gear? You can do it easier in most cases. But give a master artist a $2.99 paintbrush and he'll still paint something breathtaking.
So long as you're honest about the gear you use, and that you don't blame it for a bad take, I don't see why anyone should care.

Digidesign bought out M-Audio (or I guess Avid did anyway).
I've used my Firewire 410 with Pro Tools, Sound Forge, Acid, Ableton, and Audition.
Software makes NO difference to your recording quality.
None,
Software can make your editing and mixing life much easier though. Any major DAW should be more than adequate for editing and mixing VO.
I guess it just comes down to whether or not you like Audis or Subarus.
I'm sort of a Toyota (or classic Saab) kinda guy...

Toyota and Acura here.
Partial to the exotics of the early to mid-60s. Not as efficient, but the artwork in design is undeniable.

I don't see how using a bunch of economists to edit and mix my VO is going to help me... I'd rather them go over my balance sheet

The Alesis Multimix are inconsistent. I know I post house that bought three of them: only one worked properly. I've read of lots of driver issues too. If they work, they're good. If. |
Lance---is this the Multimix 2.0, or the silver 1.1 mixer? I'm about to buy the newer, black Multimix 2.0 board.....but maybe not, now! |

Courts in the US and EU would agree with you on that assumption.
They're reviled within the industry, not due to cost or necessarily quality (though that's been an issue with several products), but because they've been very blatant about ripping off other people's products, regardless of whether they were patented or not.
/on the rare occasions they show up to an AES show, it's an ugly thing to see...

I've been using the Eridol UA-25 for the past couple of weeks on my main recording setup while I build a new DAW. I really don't care much for it. Audio wise, it's fine, but as far as signal routing goes, it's a pain, due in no small part to the very limited software driver. I'm using the digital in/out on it, and don't like having to press the digital in button to record, or having to go back and select the digital input on my board when I want to playback. With my old setup, I had both coaxial S/PDIF's going on my sound card, but was able to mute the S/PDIF playback during recording automatically. If I have the signal digitally locked for playback, it goes into a feedback loop when I press "digital in" in order to record and can only record if I'm using the mixer's internal clock. I spent more time than I care to admit trying to configure the Edirol to do the same thing as my other sound card, with no success. The drivers are just too lean to do what I need them to do.
As for the earlier question about the rec/playback button on the back of the UA-25, your guess is as good as mine. I haven't been able to ascertain any useful function from it and figured it must be tied to the analog ins/outs. |
