Are we going to get smacked around for this banter? |

Only if that is your "thing."
I am another full-time work from homer...you would think that San Diego isn't "rural," but in many cases we really are. Most of my work comes from outside the market. But I've been online with a web presence since 1996 and have long term repeat clients and referrals too.
It takes a bit of time - a real understanding of your particular market - the skills to get a demo that showcases that talent into the hands of the people who have the bucks and the decision making power.
So, yes, it can be done. How quickly and what steps to take will be unique to you. _________________ Playing for a living...

I think we have different definitions of "rural", Connie. (For example, how many moose would wander through town in a typical week?) |

Well - certainly we don't have moose here - but we get coyotes in our neighborhood and we're 10 minutes from downtown.
My point is that I don't go to studios anymore here in town, 'cept on rare occasions. _________________ Playing for a living...

San Diego's a lovely area; can't beat the weather, for sure. Or the zoo. (A few years ago, a fellow who, at the time, was the chimp curator at a big zoo, let me in early one morning to play with the baby gorillas. What a rush. They were 30" tall, diapered, curious as can be and absolutely adorable. He'd been taking two of them home every evening for six months, where they slept in the same room with him and his wife and slowly deconstructed his house. I heard they (the gorillas) were to be relocated to the San Diego Zoo and I've always wanted to follow up and see just what they'd become (bigger, I'm thinking.)
When you do use a commercial studio, Connie, is it mainly for specialized processing/production not attainable in your home facility? |

No - it is because someone wants to see me face-to-face in a studio. I don't invite clients to my studio.
I still prefer the energy of being in a studio with other people - or ISDN at the next best thing. Phone patch is OK for the interaction, but I feel like I have half my brain tied up with monitoring the engineering side of things. And self-directed - which is the vast majority of the work I do - can dig some pretty big ruts in delivery. _________________ Playing for a living...

Good answers here too. Connie, I'm with you. I do very little local work. I didn't invite people to my studio, but made an exception recently to record a popular recording star from the 60's for a local bank. I have a small (and unimpresive) home. And, just to have some fun, when they arrived, I opened my door and said, "Was TODAY the day we were supposed to record?"
