why this showed up on a regular internet haunt of mine usually devoted to political satires and exposes, i dunno. i don't even listen to "this american life" on npr, but i did remember the name of the show and that of ira glass.
he's talking about video, and about npr-style reporting, but i've gained newfound respect for the man due to his insight on matters of creative types like those in the voiceover community who don't (or at least, shouldn't) give up.
if it's still up on youtube, invest five minutes in this:

i love his self-critique on his early voice style and his comments about himself as a narrator not even knowing what he's saying...even though he had written the script!
it's the closest creative encouragement i've found since animator chuck jones passed along his teacher's advice to young artists: "you've got at least one hundred thousand bad drawings in you. the sooner you get rid of them, the better it will be for everyone."
may we all maintain the "good taste" to know when what we're doing still isn't quite what we know it needs to be. _________________ rowell gormon

Great stuff - getting it out - critically evaluating it - and moving forward toward a goal. The hard part is seeing reporters 20 years into their career who have still not figured it out and are doing the SAME bad READ that they DID when they STARTED. _________________

Rowell,
Thank you. Really excellent. What a superb example of beneficial self-critique. _________________ Be well,

Yep I agree great stuff, It reminds me of what we used to teach when I was a success coach for a couple of well known PMA guys. As you become more and more successful you will be challenged again and again.....when these road blocks show up it's like a test asking if you really want what you are going for....it is this point...when the tests start to overwhelm...that people quit. The sad part is....it is also a good indication that you are almost there. So many people quit just as they are about to succeed. _________________ "It's the end of the day for the little girl in the rain. She's going home." |
