My friend Mike is a chronic mis-user of "literally". At a business meeting, he said, about a friend of his who lives out in the boonies: "I mean, the guy literally lives on the moon!"
Um.
CC, you wanna just confirm really quick that, currently, that's not really possible? Cuz I gave him hell for it. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Lou,
That would make him, literally, the man in the moon, huh? _________________ Be well,

*Minor threadjack advance warning*
The misuse of "literally" is annoying, but it's so common that I don't let it bother me too much.
What does get my goat every time, though, is the use of "enormity". I've heard sports announcers refer to "the enormity of the crowd" at a game, and yesterday on TV someone congratulated another on the "enormity of your success". "Enormity" does not mean "enormous-ness". It refers specifically to a monstrous evil. *sigh*
Ironically, though, the more a word is used improperly, the more accepted the usage becomes. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Also from the world of sports, there are a couple more that really bug me, One is the incorrect use of the word "verse" in place of "versus." The other is not confined to sportscasters but too many of them do it: using "notoriety" and "fame" interchangeably. |

Amen to the "notoriety" misuse!
Another one is the idiotic interchangability of "eager" and "anxious".
"We're anxious to see you in our store!!"
why?

Must be...Merriam-Webster def 3 of 4 for 'enormity':
3: the quality or state of being huge : immensity <the>
And D.B. your last post made me LOL. Heh. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Ain't NOBODY literally living on the Moon at the moment... I think your friend meant "figuratively".... which puts the guy On the Moon with Alice Kramden, but not really.
