VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

All other things being equal, do you think I would I hear a noticeable difference moving up the short trip from a Studio Projects B1 to:

1.) Studio Projects C1
2) AT 4040

And a side question...is there any real difference between the older model C1 with the offset connector and the newer model?

I went from the Studio Projects B-1 to the C-1 (older model) and I could tell a difference. Warmer, more presence and a real work horse. It just matched my voice really well. I've never heard myself on the AT 4040. I've never regretted the purchase. Just my $0.02!

The C-1 has a slightly larger capsule than the B1. If I remember correctly the B-1 was getting great reviews as an under $100 mic. I have the older version with no setting on it. I was using the Electro Voice RE-20 and an RCA 77D and had really never tried a condenser.

Then, there was a thread on this board where Deirdre was testing different condenser mics with a studio in California. The Studio Projects C1 was one that met their approval. Since I knew I already liked the B1, I visited my friendly "E-Bay dealership" and grabbed a C1. It was one of these "I don't know what "it" is but I'll know when I hear it. That was the way I felt about the C1.

I got to find out how the C1 compared when a VO-BB member posted the request for folks to read a script for a PSA where they would combine our voices. It was named "Voices for a Change" and there were 14 people involved. I felt the mic really held it's own.

These days I rarely use the RE-20 (screaming commercials) and still use the RCA for that nice "ribbon" warm sound. The RCA is the mic that if the house were on fire it would be the first thing I'd grab. <g> (Disclaimer-No family or pets live here but me.)

But, I have also read on this board that the C1 doesn't work well for some voices, which is to be expected. Unless DB has changed something, I think I'm using close to the same chain which is the C1 / Symetrix 528 (no "E") to computer. I have a low to midrange voice and am no Don LaFontaine. It's one of those mics where if something went wrong, I'd have to buy another. In fact, I just might!

Not to open a can of worms, but is there a reason you've selected those two? Have you tried out a Perception 220, Rode NT1a, or M-Audio Luna?

At that price point there are some GREAT mic options. If you can, I'd recommend a shoot out to see which fits best.

No reason other than familiarity with the brands and relatively positive comments from folks here in the past. I'm familiar with the RØDE but not with the Perception or the Luna. Also, I've seen more of the C1 and the AT4040 available on the used market as folks upgrade, and I figure there's a better chance of picking one up for cheap. If I had a lot more to spend, I'd do more of a shootout.

fwiw, i have the 4040. liked it best, after trying many mics at a local pro audio joint.

haven't had any problems with it (5 years now), and especially now with a metal pop screen, after i tried like the dickens for the purity of sound sans pop filter.

bottom line, as you know, is what sounds best for you.
