One of my clients always wants that "Sam Elliot" type narration voice. I'm usually best at it in the morning...or as the last read of the day, after about 30 seconds of yelling at the top of my lungs. Try it sometime. Wink

I have much of the same tendencies as everyone else. For the deep (horror trailer) sound, shortly after waking up in the morning OR late at night.
Midday and afternoon is best for my normal, everyday sound. Coffee helps to keep my cords loose in the morning too. But I'm useless for about an hour or so after I eat.

I have determined that my lack of skill, talent and ability is pretty consistent throughout the day, but every once in a while I find an odd minute or two when my delusions of adequacy are at their peak and I try to strike at precisely the right moment. That's why I don't use a tube mic. That waiting while it warms up can ruin the whole day!

It really doesn't matter for me - i go through the same prep, warm-up's, and tools before a session so its pretty consistent.

The only reason I prefer recording in the morning is that it's a blast taking my time making my way to the studio while everyone else rushes by as if they're already late to something - it's my little game in the morning.

I read some place that it was recommended to allow at least 2 hrs before you could do anything vocal... Also, you need to drink plenty of water! Cords must be WELL hydrated.

I've noticed many times that if I do not drink enough (and usually I do not), then the voice is hoarsy kind of.

The reason why you should not vocalize sooner than 2 hrs after awakenning is because during sleep all kinds of things accumulate on your cords, mucous etc. Just like you drink coffee to awaken yourself, your cords need time as well. In the morning my voice is usually scratchy and lower.

I give my best delivery after I've been awake for at least 2-3 hrs, had a hot cup of black coffee, and a few smokes. Sarcastic {just kidding about the cigarettes}
