OK you podcasters...
I just produced my first interview/podcast today!
It came out well. The sound was good, the client is happy...no sweat.
It was actually A LOT of fun, especially since I really like the person I interviewed & the subject matter.

BUT...but I need a WAY better way to do it.

The client was on Skype
I was on Skype
I recorded it (PLEASE don't make fun of me) using Call Burner. (I needed a quick solution & this SEEMED to fit the bill)

The sound was actually fine EXCEPT for the fact....that there was "CLICK" on the client's side of the call (Call Burner recorded each side of the conversation as a separate track)...oh....just about every 10 seconds Explode

Now I DID NOT hear these clicks during the call...so...yes...I had to go in & manually remove all the clicks....in a 30 minute podcast..."in post"!

SO...I need a reliable way to do this for the future...preferably using SKYPE 'cause the sound is a lot better than over the phone and this person is NOT an audiophile. She JUST started using SKYPE. I would like this to be seamless for her. Just call on SKYPE & I take care of the rest on my end.

I have an Alesis Multi-Mix 8 USB mixer
I have SoundForge 8 and Vegas 5

SO....Any help on patching so I don't have hours of editing every time I do this would be much appreciated.

Thanks SO much! I KNOW you guys will have a solution for me!

You guys Rock!

Liz

Liz,

I'm not sure this will be much help, but there's at least a real possibility this is a hardware problem on the other end.

Oh Man...if that's the case, then I'm pretty much up a creek.

Do you think it matters that she's on a Mac & I'm on a PC, even though we're both on SKYPE?

Hmmmmmm...If no one else has any ideas...I my have to tap a local VO to go to my client's house & take a look (standby CourVO! Wink )

Let's see what our resident gearheads come up with first.

THANKS Bob! ...I am now off to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-land.

I am thinking it was a limitation of the Call Burner software. In fact you dont need it at all. Just record it in Vegas.
Here's how:

1. On the mixer, connect the Aux Send output to the Line-In input of the soundcard.
1a. If you don't have this already, connect the output of the soundcard to an empty channel on the mixer.
2. On the mixer, pan your microphone hard left, and the output of the soundcard hard right.
3. Turn the Aux (red knobs on the Alesis) all the way to the left on the soundcard output channel (which we connected in 1a).
3. In Skype, set the Mic Input to the Line Input of the soundcard.
4. In Vegas, open up two tracks, both mono. Set one track to record the mixer, the second the soundcard. OR open one track and record it in stereo for the same effect.

There you have it! What you have just created is a quick and dirty "mix-minus" setup. You now have two independent tracks of the interview at your disposal. If you recorded in stereo, Vegas can split the tracks up for you if you need to do additional processing.

Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

I was about to recommend something similar. Since we don't have a copy of the audio to better identify things, it makes sense to isolate whether it's a HW or SW issue. Mac/PC doesn't play much of a role here (if any, which it shouldn't).

Try another aHobo Tounge. Vegas is one, Pamela or SkypeCap are others (though going direct to a DAW application is the smartest route).

Cheers!

Jamey!
I KNEW someone would come up with a solution!

OK...now this may show my KISS system...but...I have my Mic plugged directly into my Alesis and then the Alesis into my computer....I don't have another external soundcard.

Does this make me bad? Lips Are Sealed

Can I use my extra a Presounus Firebox for this purpose in steps 1/1a? (I WAS only using the Firebox for my first year of Full-Timne VO, but replaced it with the Alesis when I needed to setup my studio for Phone patching with my JK Audio Hybrid.)

Cleints have complimented sound, so I have never gotten that extra soundcard, BUT if I need one, I'll get one.....

For some reason my brain just freezes when it comes to anything to do with Patching...I think I was traumatized with the one at my old job that just made no sense!

Thanks for all your help! You guys ROCK!
