I'd like mine to sound like a horse. Or maybe a screaming child just to torment my neighborhood of muscle cars. I can't record when your car comes up the street and you can't sleep when mine's coming. Woohoo.

That's actually a great idea for two reasons. One, as the article mentioned, is to alert the pedestrian you are about to hit that there's a car coming. But the other thing people sometimes forget is that drivers assimilate all sorts of feedback to help them control their vehicles. We look out the windshield, glance at the rear-view mirrors, and feel the road vibration as translated through the steering wheel. One of thouse sources of feedback is the sound of the engine. If that sound isn't present, it might be useful to have it artificially re-introduced.

There are examples of this sort of thing we have already gotten used to. A lot of digital cameras, especially cell phone cameras, have a fake shutter sound to confirm that the picture has been snapped. I once had a Monty Python screensaver and one of the extra goodies that came in the package was a little program you could install to make your computer keyboard sound like an old-fashioned manual typewriter every time you hit they keys.

I'd probably flip back and forth between "Speed Buggy" and the speeder bikes from Jedi.

The question you have to ask is not "what sound", but at what decibel level should the sound of an electric car be?

I work with a company which makes the motor and controller for new hybrids, This company has found that the cars do make noise - tires on pavement, sound of air moving by the vehicle, the actual sound of the motor/generator, etc. Surprisingly the problem is not the lack of sound, but the lack of loud sounds (above the noise level of the surrounding world) which is creating the unusual problem.

When something happens beyond the ordinary, people tend to become afraid. This scenario, in my opinion is the concern regarding the noise, or lack therof, of EV's.

A few years ago someone had the idea to place speakers and a creatively designed computer into smaller cars. The sound produced was that of a Lamborghini, complete with idling noise and revving noise as the vehicle was traveling down the road. Of course it did not go anywhere, until now - maybe.

So do you go to the trouble of producing the noise of a Porsche or a Muscle Car for you quieter EV?

Maybe it would be a good idea to quiet down the world and for people to stop for a moment and smell the roses...

Toodles

Ditto on the Jetsons...no lanes to stay in...no red light cameras taking your picture then mailing you a $100 ticket...sorry I digress.

This reminds me of a story by Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov in which the subject of the story discovered, among other things, that the cars, while sounding fast, were actually moving very slowly.
