Like the old Bob Seger song:
I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day.
It was the hardest thing to throw them away.
("Tryin to live my life....")
ADDED 2 minutes later or so:
Incidentally Brian, I'm with you. When I posted the first time, it was because I had a craving as I was reading. Then I came back....another craving, and now I'm back and another craving. I think I have some 3 year old nicorette around here somewhere. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

I don't think there'll be quite the market for vintage tobacco as there is for say. . .vintage cars. . . _________________ Christopher G. French

Next Question could be:
Where do you get your caffeine? coffee, tea, Mountain Dew, or No-Doz?...AND before or during mic time?

3 years, 1 month, 21 days since the last cig. Gave it up when I got into whitewater kayaking, ya really need the lung capacity when you're upside down underwater in those rapids...gave up whitewater a year later in favor of touring paddling, but now that I've locked onto VO I have a new excuse dangling over my head to keep me from lapsing.
But Oh, God, I want one so often. *sigh*

I credit smoking and whiskey for giving me the deeper and "smoky" sound to my voice back in my radio days. I loved it, but I gave it up 20+ years ago. I hated the control it had over me, such as running out of smokes just before bedtime, and having to throw my clothes back on on a cold night just to go buy a stupid pack.
If my doctos ever give me a short time to live, however, I shall take it up again and enjoy every GD puff.

Gave up the smoke in Nov 1998. When I indulge in "adult beverages" from time to time, I'll have a smoke, as long as someone around me has some for me to bum.
Like Bruce, when I smoked fulltime, I had the deeper, smokey sound on the radio. Since giving it up, I have lost much of the smokey, gravely sound I had.
I have thought about picking it up again, just to get that sound back...but I just can't make myself do it. |

Funny thing for me. When I was working in radio during the day (could smoke in the studio back then!!) and playing in bands at night, I smoked at least a pack a day for ten years.
Then I met the woman I was going to marry. I got an office job where smoking was not allowed and quit the bands. I decided I wanted to live and see my kids grow up and I was able to quit like (snap fingers) that! Haven't smoked since. It's been 15 years!
At first I had cravings, particularly after eating or with a drink. I still relish the smell when I walk past someone smoking. Thus the quote.
For me, two things were essential - 1. environment and 2. something else more important in my life to turn to, and turn away from, cigarettes - a reason to not want to die prematurely.
When I smoked fulltime, I too had the deeper, smokey sound. At a recent class reunion, a friend said to me, "I thought your voice used to be lower..." So, there's a reason to be glad when you get that chest cold, the return of your friend phlegm adding character to your voice. |

Let's see... I only smoked from March of 1968 untill April of 1971. But cigarettes were cheap in the Navy... $2.00 per carton. And I was smoking 1 1/2 packs per day. I've been smoke free since 1971. Anyone who really needs to know how I did it, can PM me. Believe it... or not.

I love smoking. But, I quit in 1981. My wife said she wouldn't kiss me if I smoked any more, and she didn't. I found I could get away with smoking no more than 2 a day and pass the breath test -- provided I smoked early in the morning at work. But, then, once I was down to that number, I figured it must be my mind that was giving me problems, not the drug.
I knew I was really addicted when I crumpled a pack and threw them in the trash can. Then, six days passed, the trash can was loaded with refuse and in the morning at 5:30 a.m., the day of trash collection, I found myself digging out the butts. And, then, there were the times when I'd flush them down the toilette, one at a time to teach myself a lesson about wasting money, only to go find a pack of ZigZags and collect butts on the street to roll one up. I guess I was worse than a Crack head. After about 3 years of abstinance, the urge left.
I don't have have any cravings these days. But, I went to Cuba (legally from L.A.) and I had to try some cigars. There's nothing like a Cohiba. And, Havana Club Gran Reserva.
I indulge in a cigar periodically. Something makes me think I sound better after smoking one. But, it could be the tequila talkin'. _________________ Charlie |

I quit back in July, but now I'm addicted to Nicorette and Tic Tacs!
I used to think it helped my voice, especially after those late bar nights in my misspent youth. I've heard that Nat King Cole was a chain-smoker -- he thought it helped his singing voice. He died of lung cancer in his 40s. _________________ John Bailey Voiceovers |

True. Many of the top vocalists of our time actually smoked on a regular basis. |
