VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I have some audio which was recorded in a bit of a noisy studio, with a low hum.

I got rid of some of the background noise by gating it but now there is the unmistakeable sound of processing on some of the syllables. It's not terrible, but to a professional ear it's definitely there.

It's in the gaps with the breaths, but I can silence those out.

Apart from getting audio recorded in a better studio, can anyone suggest a way to get rid of the odd "phasing" sounds that give away the fact that the voice has been processed?

I use Audition by the way.

Do you still have the file before you used the noise gate? There can be other ways to solve the noise and hum problem. Is it a long file? And what size in Mb's? Just send me a minute of audio and I'll see what I can do with the audio restoration plug-ins I have... at least I'll have a go at it, sounds like a nice challenge as well

The best way to get rid of the phasing sound is to not use Audition's noise reduction. Instead, download a copy of Audacity 1.3 and use theirs. It is much better.

I find Sony's Noise Reduction 2.0 to be one of the best I have ever used. PT plugins are fine, but Sony's NR 2.0 is cleaner and easier to use, and can do things not thought of in PT.

The absolute is designed for Steinberg's Nuendo, but then again, it's a bit pricey.

Audicity has a much more practical cleaner plugin that AA (as Lee Stated) and is FREE, just download. But for your audio, I would definitely suggest the Sony NR 2.0.

I'm with Frank on the Sony Noise Reduction 2.0 plug-in. I've used it successfully to clean up a number of very noisy audio files. (I also like Soundsoap Pro for Pro Tools and VST, but would avoid the lower cost and less flexible Soundsoap standard.)

The Sony program - does it work with Audition or as a standalone, or do I have to have Pro Tools or something? (Excuse my ignorance)

The Sony Noise Reduction plug-in works with any application that supports Direct-X plug-ins. I'm pretty sure Adobe Audition does so.

Yes, I've used the Sony Noise Reduction plug-in with Sound Forge quite a few times. In fact, Sound Forge 9 (the pro version) comes with the Noise Reduction plug-in, bundled as part of the package.

The Sony program looks very good, and I've sort of tried playing around with the demo version, but there seems to be no actual instructions for people like me of limited technical knowledge. Any ideas where Noise Reduction For Idiots might be found?

Diamond Cut also has a good filter for continuous noise as well as harmonic rejection and dynamic noise reduction.
