One of the ad agencies that I've done some voice work for has invited me to an anniversary party of sorts for their business. There will probably be a number of prospective clients for me to schmooze with at the party. It's being laid out in what seems like a comfortable, informal manner. What is the best way for me to network with these folks without being too pushy or too reserved. I've never really done this type of thing btw so all advice is welcome.

the biggest thing is just be yourself - REALLY yourself.
conversations will start, you just need to make sure you let people know what you do and mention your client's name. that's it. the rest will take care of itself.

(carry your business card) If you exchange business cards, just always, always take a second or two to read the other person's card before just placing it in your pocket.

This should go without saying, but do not drink too much. One drink an hour should be fine. Also, listen to whomever you are talking to and ask questions. The greatest conversationalists are listeners. Or to put it another way, remember that everyone, but you, are waiting for their next chance to talk. You will leave a fantastic impression and not come across as pushy and desperate.

My thoughts: (for whatever they are worth): Go and have fun!

Don't be forceful with your approach, but as you are introduced, state who you are and what you do. Don't go into detail. Listen! Listen! Listen!

If they have questions, answer them. However, point out that this is a party for the advertising agency, if they would like to talk about YOUR business YOU could set an appointment with THEM for later in the week, tomorrow, etc.

Talk about the Ad Agency as your main focus. Or, ask the Prospective Clients about THEIR business or even their personal information... "...So I heard you were into sailboating?"

People always like to talk about themselves, and it's a great way for them to ask about you - later. They will think about how interested you were in the Host and of course, themselves... you win! You also become a "True Professional" in their book.

Have business cards ready, but DO NOT force them on people, only give them out if they ask for one.

Decorum, manners, and honesty - sell well in these types of occasions.

"Eat, Drink, and be Merry - - for tomorrow you may be in Utah!"
