WOW, puts my closet to shame. I'm jealous.
And Connie, remember Mike is like 7'6" tall so maybe that's why the monitor is up so high! _________________ Pam Tierney

What an inspirational space. I've just started on my new house=new studio project (we closed on the house today). Sort of like Kara, I showed my wife the pictures and said, "THIS." _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Maiku your studio is beautiful and I love your medicine chest and Didge. Are you really 7'6" tall? |

OK, I now have new found confidence in my budding DIY skills! Thanks for the comments!

Nah, Pam's exaggerating. Either that or she's got a really, really bad memory. Let's face it, if I were that tall, Tokyo is the last place I'd be living. .
The monitor is fixed at that height, but I can change the angle and bring it out more from the wall. I now wish I had placed it a little lower though. I only really use it while setting up a track for recording, so it's a minor hassle really.
The AC is indeed a little noisy and gets switched off when recording. It doesn't bother me when editing. Unfortunately It's pretty essential during the nasty, hot summer months.
OK what else?...oh yeah, the acoustic stuff. That was all taken from my studio-before-last which was in it's own premises that I commuted to everyday. Some of it was custom built for that studio and has been 'adapted' for this place. I think it all came to about $10,000 originally, but that included shipping from the US which was pretty hefty.
Mary. Yeah, nice microscope. It's a vintage Olympus from 1963 that I picked up in mint condition. I also have a new, stereo microscope in the library.
Congrats on the new house Brian! Don't forget to post pics once the studio is done. You too Kara & Simon. C'mon, make ME jealous.
Edo-san. I haven't done full production work for a long time, but it might be on the cards again for the future. I'd be interested in hearing your suggestions for the monitors. Something about bringing them in a bit away from the corners so that the traps are behind them? Just guessing.
Finally, I found a couple of "before" pics.

Boy howdy, I'll tell you what— I'm more inspired than evar to do more destruction before I begin contruction on Camp Cooper 2, the sequel. I have a shallow closet that is certainly full of stuff, but nothing that can't be moved. It's one of those odd closets that is wider than the door's opening, so it will require tearing out part of the wall. hmmm. might be a great sound containment.
Dang— now I'm inspired!! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Kumba-wa Maiku!
Not only would I move them away from the wall, I would also make sure the listening angle is a perfect 60 degrees. In the current situation the speakers are aimed at you @ 90 degrees, but that can cause some serious 'standing waves' in your room. Also I'd suggest putting them on stands behind your desk, to avoid low-end coupling of the table top.
Where your chair is now, you're in front of the 'hotspot', so accurate listening is a bit tough. Therefore your stereo imaging is way off, thus creating judging difficulties when in mixdown. In the current angle you need to at least move the chair back more than 2 meters. |

Pam,
No question, Mike Rhys is a giant when it comes to talent. I hope when I grow up I can be like Mike. _________________ Be well,
