Screen Legend Paul Newman Dies at 83 of Cancer
Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.
Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

I loved being surprised by his voice. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Way back in 1972, Newman was campaigning with presidential candidate Paul McCloskey for the New Hampshire primary. One of the stops they made was at WFEA in Manchester where I was the afternoon jock. Naturally, Newman's presence in the building generated quite a frenzy. Everyone was swarming around him. Everyone except me. I was kind of stuck in the studio cueing up my records and talking every couple of minutes. Amidst all the hubbub surrounding him he somehow noticed that I was sort of a captive in my little booth and he ducked into the studio, stuck out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Paul Newman." It was a thoughtful gesture that I have always appreciated. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

He was a class act.
I'm so sad he's gone.

I spent a weekend around "P.L" Newman at Road Atlanta when I was doing a little PR for "Datsun." We shared breakfast and racing stories. He was the consumate professional and gentleman. And he would challenge and whip all us younger dudes in games of physical skills. He was always in incredible shape. (His wife and I actually would fight for camera space in the pace truck. Guess who always won?)
I remember in cinematography class studying why Paul Newman was the favorite actor of women AND men. Research showed that women just loved him.... and men related to him.. "yeah, that could be me up there." He was a very worthy source of positive aspiration. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

"Cars" was a cool movie. Well worth watching over and over again.
PN was a great "giver" as well. With his line of sauces and donating proceeds (or a portion of them?) to charity, I believe!

He lived a long, full life, and he got to do what he wanted while making a positive mark on society. That's a great thing. He will be missed. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
