I just scored a dbx 286a mic pre-amp on Ebay for $120 (including shipping).
Hope I'm still happy once it arrives and I fire it up. Wish me luck.

It's a nice box. Even at the regular price, it's a great quality
pre-amp. you'll like it.

Go light on the compression and EQ.
compression at 2
density at 2

Run the expander at
threshold -30
ratio 1.8:1
