Uh, Johnnie....have you sold the VoiceMaster Pro yet? I'd be interested at that price.

Hey Courvo,
I'm pretty sure it's sold. I'm just waiting on a check to get here. If it's falls through, I'll let you know.

Johnny,
Just curious, what did you replace your U87 and Hamburg with? |

Hi Rellis,
I had a bunch of mics. The Shure SM 5B. TLM 103, Telefunken AK 47, ADK Hamburg II AU, Blue Blubird and U87AI (in that order). I found the best fit for my voice to be the Telefunken and Bluebird. So I decided to sell the rest. My main mic is the Telefunken and I use the Bluebird as a backup.

Thanks John, fellow TLM 103er here too.
It has actually been a pretty good mic for me, but I'll be test driving a Telefunken AK 47 here in a day or two....! |

Hi Rellis,
So far, the Telefunken AK47 works best for my voice. I have it paired with a GML 2032 preamp/eq. Tuesday, I'll be getting a Neve Portico 5043 compressor to go with it. I'm planning on using one side of the Neve for gentle compression and the other side for a touch of limiting.
I was using the Manley Voxbox and really liked it, but for long form work (which is mostly what I do), I wanted a solid state preamp for consistency. I'll get copy changes a good bit, sometimes a year after the original was done and as tubes wear, they tend to sound a little different.
Good luck in finding that "special" mic chain. It's a never ending process!

does this apply to the tubes in a mic as well?
I am actually finding that my Avalon 737 may be coloring my mics too much, and to my ear I'm getting a better sound of late by running them directly into my MOTU Ultralite interface, which has pre-amp, phantom power, etc.
How did you choose the 2032? Did you look at John Hardy, Great River, etc.
(those are solid state pre-amps, aren't they?) |

I suppose, but from what I've been told it shouldn't be a problem.

I considered those as well, but went with the GML unit on the recommendation of Adam at Mercenary Audio. He said it would work very well with the Telefunken AK47. They let me try it out before committing to buying it. I also wanted an eq and this unit has an incredible eq section. George Massenburg invented the parametric eq, so I know it's a great one! _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Yes.
Good tubes in good gear doesn't have this issue as much as some of the lower end stuff, but it happens regardless. Abacus Audio here in NYC stopped using their U47s and some of their vintage stuff because while they were getting good sounds from the mics, they were noticing that they either had to warm the mics up for a few hours or to accept the fact that the mic's sound would change as they used it during long sessions.
The upside is that "good" doesn't always mean expensive. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Hi Jowillie,
I think you misread. The two preamps mentioned are the Avalon 737 and the George Massenburg Labs 2032, unless I missed something. Interesting link anyway!

Tubes do tend to "wear out"; even in microphones. If you buy a tube microphone, buy replacement tubes too. You will be glad you did in about ten years. Break-in time for your "tube" varies, but do it slowly upon purchase. Then listen for inconsistencies as you use the microphone. You will know when to change the tube when things sound different in your recordings.
Yes, there is a major difference between tube pre's and solid state pre's. The key is having the right tubes available when necessary. Personally, I like the sound of a tube preamp as they tend to sound warmer, smoother, and fuller.
I have yet to find a solid state preamp which sounds as "friendly" and warm as a tube preamp. That said, I always change the tubes in my equipment; even with new purchases (unless I get lucky and the preamp has a good tube in the unit from the manufacturer).

I believe I answered that in another post... somewhere here on the VO-BB.
Sorry I cannot be more specific as you have not said which piece of equipment for which you wish to change the tube.
