Hi Rob,
I'm planning on either just taking my Gefell 930 along (it's so compact) or purchasing another one as a backup and travel mic.
I've heard the KEL mics are cheap and sound pretty good, but they're not dynamics.

I use a MXL v67g as a travel mic. It has a touch more low end than the 103 and doesn't pick up as much ambience. It can be easily EQed to match the character of a 103.
You won't find a dynamic that sounds like a 103, unless you get a Heil which will sound like a broken 103.

As a fellow M930 owner, it is definitely compact, but for travel I'm thinking a dynamic will be better for the unpredictable acoustics of the road.
I've heard good things about the Shure SM7B.

Actually I'm only trying to get in the ballpark of that mainstream condenser sound. Technically I don't even have a TLM 103 as it has been replaced with a Gefell M930, but I reference the 103 because it is a more mainstream brand, though the M930 sounds similar (but better to my ear) |

True. I've used the SM7B at radio stations years ago and never really cared for them. To me they sounded muffled and lifeless (just my opinion).

If you get that 415 it's very compact and travels well. Kinda like a cute puppy in one of those pet sherpas that you see animals in an airplane with their owners (or by the animal's perspective, pets).  |

Audio Technica ATM25 sounds real good. Hypercardiod. Very focused.
Looks like a mini RE20. I own one. It was my first home mic.
Sounds better than my PR20 or SM57.
How about a SDC? More forgiving than an LDC.

Thanks Lance. The v67 is condenser, right? How does that work for you in hotel rooms, etc.
They all sound reasonably close. How much processing and EQ on these?
Does any one else have input on the SM7 or RE 20 as dynamics that will approximate a Gefell M930 or TLM 103? For some reason I have SM7 on the brain. Johnny says they sound dull but there is a bass roll-off switch that I understand brightens up the sound some. |

That's just my opinion. I'm using the M930 and am considering the M940 with it's tighter pattern for travel use.

Thanks for the info, Willie, very helpful.
If the low output of the SM7 is anything like the SM 57 then the noise floor could be a concern.
It's looking more like the Heil PR 40 might be the better option.
Or maybe one of the new Neumann dynamics? |

Don't get the PR40...I couldn't get mine to sound good for nearly two years. I'm very "Shure" that it won't sound good on your voice. 
You can EQ the heck out of 3-7kHz and the harshness never goes away, and I haven't heard a sample of the PR40 that I really liked. I also tried it on many different preamps of different character.
I drank the kool-aid on that mic, and now I've spat it out.
