Nothing in God's creation is uglier than the "poor man's lobster" aka Monkfish.

You know what. . .just give me Mrs. Paul's batter dipped fish sticks and a bottle of vinegar and I'm happy. Shocked

Catfish are pretty ugly too....and you gotta catch 'em big, 'cause once you cut the head off...there's not much left to cook.

My father-in-law used to catch HUGE catfish by hand along the banks of the Mississippi. They called it "HOGGING". They'd drift along slowly, with an arm feeling up under the lip of the shoreline, often resulting in a catch when you'd jam your hand down the maw of a waiting catfish. It may sound like a "fish story", but it was a relatively successful way of catching catfish...

The only drawback: once in a while you'd catch a cotton-mouth instead.

Long, long ago...at my mom's house...my oldest brother moved back in for a year or two, and brought with him his 55-gal tank with his Oscar, and gave it a place of honor atop the planter that separates the family room from the stairwell to the basement. One day, we didnt see Oscar in the tank. But we did see a missing glass pane atop the tank, and shards of plate glass... we found Oscar in the basement, on the floor near the drain, having eventually shuffled off his mortal fishy coil after flopping his way downstairs and accross about 15 feet of steps... I guess he just absolutely had to see what was on the other side of the tank and rammed his way thru the lid. And fell down the steps.

Be careful what you wish for.

A brochette of Monkfish as a starter is delicious and you don't need power tools to get to it.

Deirdre, your picture of a monkfish almost makes it look attractive in comparison to the image that I had in mind.

Which reminds me, Red Lobster is having some sort of lobster special going on right now and I'm taking the wife to lunch there in a couple of hours.

MMMMMMMMM!!!

It's a bit odd-- eating something that looks as though it could eat ME.
