My paternal grandparents came through EI...a couple of young Polish kids. Then, they changed their surname to become more "American". Hence, my family tree on my father's side is quite convoluted. By the time I was born, they'd tried out three different surnames; it was mostly an effort to evade the government. Although they were happy to be in the US, they still had lingering trust issues with any government knowing too much about them. Gee, the more things change, the more they stay the same (pardon the cliche).

My father was a bit of thug in his youth. A Philly judge convinced him that a hitch in the army would be a better option than a year in the can. So in 1939 he wound up at Fort Dix, NJ as part of the Big Red One ( He landed in North Africa at the start of WW II. That story is still in research, as he simply refused to talk about his POW days.)

At the time of enlistment the induction boys mentioned to my father that he had two surnames: Hadwal on his birth certificate and Hadala on his license.
My father, not one to sweat over the small stuff, simply told them, "I like Hadwal better." The midwife who delivered my father had simply made a spelling error on his BC. And my father, being the kind of person he was, couldn't care less. So, Hadwal we became.

It's truly amazing how we all came to be as a result of that port of entry.
I was thrilled to add my small part to the project.
