As the engineer I would have left him to it. Orson Welles had a talent and status that entitled him to a degree of respect, it gave him no right to be an arrogant, ill mannered bully. |

DB,
Where'd you find that? In the "RoseBud" file?

Orson Wells was well known for doing a read ONLY ONCE. He did not do again, period.
Mrs. Rogers was Orson's personal and only prodcuer for many years. The "Engineer" in this case was immediatly fired. Mr. Wells left the studio after speaking with Mrs. Rogers, and did not finish the recording for three months, and with another Engineeer of HIS choosing.
Would that it be that I could have enough moxie to do that... "one more word out of you and you go..." I could have used that line today, about five times...
For the well known wine commercial in his later years..."we will serve no wine before it's time...", Orson ad-libbed the line... liked it so much that he refused to read the real copy... the rest is history...

That is priceless!
I had also heard that he was drunk as hell most of the time during the wine commercials.
Perhaps he was a method actor? |

My sentiments exactly.
And they actually fired the poor guy? Because there was outside noise marring the recording, and he was trying to ensure a pristine recording of His Majesty's stellar performance unsullied by imperfections? What's the word I'm searching for..."enabling"?
On one hand, I still wish I'd have been able to break into Hollywood and be doing SFX there, since the money's good. But at least in the lo/no budget indies I don't have to tiptoe around celebrity tyrants being coddled like child Gods. That sort of thing does no one any good, above or below the line. |

Okay, Orson Wells was a great actor, and he even did good in all those Perry Mason movies in the late 80s. . .(okay, yes, I know it was Raymond Burr, but by that time, who could tell the difference?). . .but he didn't have to be such a pringle about the engineer wanting a clean take. _________________ Christopher G. I just played the Orson Wells thing for Jen and she said this. . ."That sucked. . .and the practical joke on Halloween wasn't too funny either." _________________ Christopher G. French

My Orson Welles history is not terribly keen-- obviously. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

>>it was October 30th 1938... unless of course halloween used to be a day early
and it IS a day early in Utah when Halloween (or, really, most any holiday) falls on a Sunday. Some take to posting signs on their front door stating that trick-or-treaters ought to return the next day...on HALLOWEEN _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!
