I had earlier had a response from a member of the Threadjackers Union -- a.k.a. Todd - - but I can't seem to find his reply. Can this wonderful community point me in the right direction of any vo-job websites that do not require you to pay to be a member of ?
Thanks.
Kevin

There are places like freelancer.com, but you get what you pay for.

I've actually had a couple of gigs from free listing... it's a lot of effort to trawl through them, but one in particular is a pretty high level corporate entity that pays well and is now a repeat customer. Craigslist, Mandy, eLance and the like are out there and it is possible to establish contact with a lucrative client... but as Jeff says, you get what you pay for, and it can be very time consuming.

It's like the difference between the free dating sites and the paid ones. Kiss

Thus far, Voice Realm is not charging a fee, although they will take a commission from any job you book through them.

As far as I understand it, Voice Realm selects the talent it wants on its roster and then sends them filtered auditions and charges 10% commission. Ummm... isn't this agent territory, or have I misunderstood (yada, yada, usual disclaimer, I usually do).

The point of a P2P is that the have a business model (like it or not) that either charges the talent (or anything that moves). If you're offering a free listing and auditioning service to talents (and charging only on a commission basis), then you have to be selective or the whole thing implodes under its own weight as it becomes impossible for clients to select efficiently from the unbridled, seething mass of "talents".

Ooops... I must re-read my signature line Embarrassed

Then again, there's just nothing like SEO for finding non P2P jobs. Just got a call from guy in Texas who found me via a search (if you type in "professional narration" on Google, I come up on page one), and he hired me to voice a nice little powerpoint presentation. LOVE it when the work just comes to you like that.

i did a mid-to-lowish paying job 18 months (or so) ago for a german agency from an ad on guru. this morning i found out that i am to be the new american voice of "Car2Go" in europe ... many, many scripts for many, many more euros that the original gig. no audition, just an email saying "yer da guy ... deets on the way". it was more "german-sounding" when she said it, though.

Thanks for the great information regarding my nonp2p question. . .Craiglist? Duh, I just never would have thought! Thanks for the "outside the box" suggestions!

I'll continue looking. Currently I am not doing vos full-time -- I have a wonderful Government job with good benefits (**which is different than being a radio DJ, which is what I did for almost 20 years!).
BUT, I will be eligible to retire in about 7 years and then -- boy, I'd love to do NOTHING but voice-work as a "hobby", a paying hobby.

As I tell my family, once I retire and can do what I want to do full-time, just leave me in a small, padded room, and let me talk to myself. Smile

Thanks again for the tips/comments....

Kev

Hey Todd,

Wow, that is a great story about how you are the American Voice for that German company. . .kind of goes in line with what I have seen in my life, that, generally, the harder you work, the luckier you get!

Hi Scott, Can you give me the complete URL of that SEO voice-over website that you mentioned in the NON-pay-to-play thread ?

Many thanks.

Kev,

Keep that Fed retirement date in focus. A Fed pension with medical benefits is a great parachute to have while you're developing that VO "hobby" into a 2nd income.

Another route is to get in with talent pools or production houses that carry a roster of talents. There are quite a few in Europe and Asia that need English speaking VO talents, and I book a fair amount of work that way. They often pay very little at first trying you out with smaller clients, but then they pay US market rates for bigger jobs. At least that's been my experience.

Not to derail the thread but just a heads up that The Voice Realm are now taking a 15% commission AND charging a $75 fee to sign up.

I wanted to sign up because some friends said that they are getting decent leads above the rates that Voice Realm have listed. However, I'm not ok with the double-dipping.
