Sorry folks, just had to show them off. It's not as pricey as Kgenus's stuff, but for those who play around in the studio, these are true beauts
/and I'm not talking about the M-610... though with the minor mods, that thing is pretty smoking too
Thanks to Adam from Mercenary for showing these off to me (rat bastage... you knew I'd get them). And to Jonathan Little for coming up with these wild preamps. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I have to say that I wasn't sure what to expect of them when I first heard them. But being able to use a transformer, to install an additional transformer, to use an external transformer, or just go transformerless piqued my interest.
Then you have the phase and LF resonance tools which are part of the package (I spent a full week playing with those). Yummy.
When I oversaturated the transformer and the VO track attacked nicer than all but one of my tube preamps (and it was on the same par with that one) I fell in love.
Now I just need two more... just because _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

What day is trash day at your place? I may make a trip up there just to rummage through your garbage to see what you have tossed out. It's probably all better than my front line equipment! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Yeah, the LMNOPre is wicked spiffy.
Any recommendations for what's a good preamp with say a SM7b or Heil PR40? _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

For a dynamic mic, I can't go too insane (but I should)! Three price ranges:
1.) Under $1000 - not particularly interested in the lower end...say $600 and up.
2.) $1000-$1500 This is realistically my limit considering the other purchases I see in my crystal ball.
3.) $1500-$2000 _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Not to be rude, but having a dynamic mic has little to do with the quality of a preamp you use. A good preamp is a good preamp. Good gear now means that you don't have to replace it later as your studio grows.
But that's just an opinion

That is the lower end, sorry to say. But that doesn't mean that you can't get a great sound out of a preamp at this price point. Even for less, there are some top talents kicking butt and taking initials (it takes too long for full names with all the auditions ) using DBX 286, M-Box 2 Pros, etc.
For $600 - $1000 I'd look at the John Hardy M1 (single channel), Grace Designs 101, and Great River single channel.

Snag a 2 channel Hardy, or an Avalon M5. The LMNOPre is $1500 per channel and I don't normally recommend them publically (I don't like to share They totally rock IMHO, but to each their own).
Avalon 737, or Great River 2 channel (definitely prefer that over the Avalon, but both are standards in the industry).
Preamps are like mics... you find what works best for you. I spend a hell of a lot of time and $ until I found some that did for me. Life is funny that way.
Find a good place that will let you "play" with their stuff and use what works for you. Mercenary Audio and SoundPure are good folks, as is Front End Audio. And being in Atlanta, you can freaking trip over studios... take your local recording engineer out for a drink or two and pick his brain. That's how I got started... much to my better half's chagrin.

Thanks for your response. I agree that a good pre is a good pre; and if anything, a dynamic mic screams out for a really great preamp.
It's looking more and more like either the Great River or the Hardy, both of which I've test-driven. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I'm currently running a Rode NTK through a dbx286a, but am considering upgrading to a Great River... haven't tried one out yet but have heard a lot of really good things about them. Is there a night-and-day difference? And would the 2-channel be of any more use to me than the 1-channel if I'm just running one mic? _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

Both are good preamps, and widely used in the VO world.
Of the two, I prefer the Hardy on most voices for it's ability to stand out of a mix.
If you get the chance, test out the LMNOPre and compare the three. I'll admit that I love the things, but I bought my first one a year ago and liked it enough to get a second.
And enough to start looking at getting two more.
It's very Great River sounding when the transformer is used (the stock transformer that is, you can install a second transformer of your choosing or externally use one), But can become as colorful as the Hardy or as clean as an Avalon (minus the HF). Much like my "go to" compressors and EQs, it's very versitile, which is why I like it.
Right now the top three preamps for VO in my mind are the Great River, the Hardy, and the Little Labs. I just preferred the Little Labs, but you won't go wrong with any of the three.
The important thing though is to spend time with any and all of the choices on your list. I did when I did my mic shootout and found what I considered to be a hidden gem. Gear is funny that way... sometimes you find just what you need, when you aren't looking for it.
Just post some clips when you get your preamp... I love hearing the sounds people put together with their recording chains. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
