Doug, you lost me on this one... so how DO you describe what an UNnouncer is? What DOES that sound like?

OK.
I think I'm reaching the really angry phase of my career.
Dan: If my wedge is a genre, and I'm driving my genre into a genre (your words).... I dunno... I got lost in that analogy.
FranK: You know I love you like a brother, but for what you propose, I have no practical map or applicable skills.

I can whip-up a website.
I'm absolutely stymied at the next step.
I think what I'm running smack-dab into, here, is the distinct definition of where I'm most deficient in my VA portfolio. I've got the talent goods, the willingness, brains, determination, discipline and steadfastness,(oh, and... er...uh humility) but nearly bereft of self-marketing, cold-calling, or self-promotion skills. It's really REEEEELY frustrating.

I thought I sent you my book, there is a step-by-step process to follow to do the research. Oh, I forgot, you are spending your time social marketing... (not that it's bad) but you don't have time to read my book.

Dave,
Sorry about that. Dinner was ready and I rushed it. It sounded great in my hunger pained head.
You have a "wedge" for narration; one for promo; one for commercial and so on. The tip of the wedge is your signature read for that genre. It must be strong enough to stand along side the the talent already working in that field, but, be unique enough for the producers to take notice and make room for you. The more you work in that field, (the wedge being driven in) the more you will be allowed to show your range.
Also, to paraphrase Philip; live and promote the career you have, not the one you wish for. For example, I am a commercial VO, first. So it is the first demo listed on my site. My signature in commercial is a slightly hip/casual/trustworthy/intelligent read. So, it's the lead on my demo and reinforced two additional times in the same demo. My visual branding also reinforces that image. The other genres/wedges I work in follow in the order of the amount of work I perform. So, my entire marketing strategy is also shaped like a wedge. My strongest suit first makes way for the rest.
Hope that clears up some of the confusion. Now, it's time for dessert. |

Dave-
Here is something to consider as well....
No single pro baseball player has ever made it the major leagues without the talent it takes to get there...yet all of them not only have a manager, but they have coaches too. Hank Aaron had a batting coach....so did Pete Rose...they both achieved the ultimate in greatness. Nolan Ryan had a pitching coach..so did Tom Seaver......they were 2 of the best pitchers I ever saw throw a baseball. Where would all these great players be if major league baseball teams did not employ coaches to help players with their mechanics in pitching and hitting? Hard to tell, but I doubt they would have achieved greatness.
My point is...maybe it's time to seek the counsel of a VO coach who is trusted and proven in this field. Someone who could guide you, mentor you and most importantly be brutally honest about where your strengths are. Workshops are great but one-on-one coaching with one you have complete confidence in will probably kick your career to the next level alot faster in my opinion. Just something to think about while in the on deck circle in the game of V |

Sorry Dave, you're right, I was unclear. "UNnouncer" actually makes it easier for me to describe what I don't sound like. That may see a little counterintuitive, but believe me, it's not. And before I explain what an UNnouncer is or what one sounds like (since good branding shouldn't require an explanation), I'd prefer it if you (or anyone else) would tell me what your impression of the word is, or what an UNnouncer might sound like.
