I've wanted (needed) to build one of these Harlan Hogan Porta Booth for some time. I was able to get the large ITSO fabric bin from Target for $10. I needed some Aralex/Auralex foam, but Guitar Store was closed, and I couldn't remember who said they had some spare pieces. So I had to improvise with 2" hi-density foam from UFO… $15. for a 2' x 3' sheet.

This is the Auralex Forming Tool, sold in appliance stores everywhere... also slices ham and turkey.

Now I have to see if it works... or if it's just a mic garage.

Is that foam spongy or is it stiff insulation or carving foam?

Does the fabric bin have cardboard in between the fabric, i.e. is it solid on the 5 sides? Or is the bottom just fabric?

It's not spongy like egg crate... more stiff like sofa cushions. UFO sells mostly fabric and foam for reupholstering.

The fabric bin has some kind of heavy duty cardboard between the fabrics. There is a fabric covered board that fits in the bottom of the bin to keep it open.

Don't use the bottom part of the box and you got a winner.

The bottom of the box is directly behind the microphone. Are you saying to leave the board in, and take the foam piece in front of it out? This would leave only foam on 2 sides of the mic and the top.
Question

If I wanted one something like this I would have made it too. You are resourceful. Good job. Really glad you didn't go out and buy one.

How does that foam compare to the the actual 'sound proofing' foam, both in price and results?

I made one of these too, and, I'm embarassed to admit, at first I thought it would be a great idea to use squares of a thin eggshell mattress pad. Yeah I know, I'm not exactly a studio engineer.

Two recordings, both no processing, straight up across the board using GoldWave.
Recording 1
The mic is located 2˝feet from computer.
TEST1

Recording 2
The mic is located in center of the box, about 6+ feet from computer.
TEST2

To me, in the box doesn't sound as sharp, and I still hear a computer sound.
Explode
Recording 1 (with noise reduction)
I used Noise Reduction/Initial Noise. Sounded better than the others.
TEST1A

To my ear TEST 2 sounds muffled and yes I can hear the noise.
Noise reduction seems to take out the ambient noise.

Has anyone use the Harlan Hogan Thing?

Sorry Don't use the bottom insert board that comes with the box. Just use the foam.

It's not going to eliminate noise. It's only intended to minimize echo and room ambiance.

Now this set up is not going to take care of everything. You'll also need to use a moving blanket or heavy curtain behind you to reduce the refections of the back walls. This is also a requirement of the Harlan Hogan device.

The Harlen Hogan device has it's problems too, primarily boomyness, due to its construction and design. And that's why you do not want to use the solid bottom with your box.

Mike thanks for the advice. I'll remove the insert board and see if there's any noticeable difference. I guess I was thinking the HH box was the end all. The blanket makes sense. Thanks again.

It's not spongy like egg crate... more stiff like sofa cushions.

Greetings,
Sorry to bring this thread back after a week or so, but the above has me wondering if you couldn't use a sofa cushion cut into a pyramid shape as shown above. They would be 3-4" thick, and the foam does feel more dense than egg crate. What do y'all think?
Thank you for your time and expertise,

Scott Lyle

I would try to avoid cutting up sofa cushions and other furniture to create a sound box, especially when the wife is at work. And as for the 3-4" thick... remember, you would still need to have enough room to place the mic inside inside the box.
