Inoccent Just been contacted by a company in Canada about an E-Learning project. Here are the details:

- "Approximately a few hours of finished voice over material."
- Can edit their work and provide us with finalized scripts
- Can offer a price per finished hour of work-1 hour is about 5000 words

I hour will not result in 5000 words for me!

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Yeah-- that more like 1.5 to 2 hours, if you ask me. Since they mentioned a per-word expectation, and if you're doing this in your own studio, I'd do the maths based on the word count and then quote per 5000 word unit.

It's the only thing I can think to do when there's such a large gap between their expectation and my reality.

Really?
For me 1 hour of finished audio is about 9,000 words.

Darren,

I'd say Philip's suggestion is spot on and very close to my own rates for such projects.

I thought we were talking about production time. 5000 words = 90 to 120 minutes of production time (and a little over 30 minutes of finished audio).

I agree with both Liz and Philip. When I calculate rates, I figure 160-175 words per minute, although a nice easy read would be 150, which gives you 9000 words for an hour.
And $750 - 1000 is about right (maybe $1000 for the first hour and $750 for each subsequent one).

I may not be reading the client needs right, but in the end, you need to clarify if you are editing the final files.
That takes time and you should be paid for your time.,

If you are just recording several large files, (maybe cutting out the bad takes but letting them do all the individual file creation/final editing), then $750 to $1000 is a decent price for a 5000-word project.
It equates to between 15-&-20-cents per word.

If you are editing, make it 25 cents per word minimum.

Don't sell yourself short.
