I can't resist a good microphone conversation!
Mic's are like icecream, everyone has a flavor. What sounds ok on a woman's voice may not sound right on a bass/baritone.
I have a decent mic locker and have moved up the ranks with several stops along the way.
I still keep my RE-20 for travel work, My Mike Joly modded RodeNT1a is in one of the vocal booths I use and I love how it sounds on my voice. My studio was built around my Neumann u87i and is truly wonderful.
For the money I would check out oktavamod.com I don't work for the guy, but I'm a true fan of his work and his ability to take a crap Chinese microphone and make it rock.
Once you get hooked on microphones, it's a tough habit to kick. And don't get me started on headphones!
BUT as you move up to better and better microphones, your room should be ready for it. A Shure SM7b is a LOT more forgiving of the environment it's in. A good condenser will start hearing the refrigerator, fish tank and the cat's stomach gurgling.
So go slow and improve your gear as you improve your game. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

[quote="Scott Pollak"] "Personally, I'm LOVING the ever-so-subtle improvement in warmth from the CAD. At the moment it's going to be my go-to mic. "
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm with Scott on this . After trying many mics over the last 2 years, both LDCs and dynamics, I have settled on the RE20 for audiobooks and other longer reads, and the CAD E100s I recently purchased for everything else. The CAD is amazing! Quiet, warm, robust ... (Just MY preferences for MY voice, mind you ... ).
I am curious as to preamps of choice, particularly those of you using the RE20 and/or E100s? I recently got a deal I couldn't refuse on a UA710, and I love this preamp! In my estimation it is near perfect for these mics and my voice. (I had been using a Symetrix sx202 and the dbx286s, both perfectly acceptable, both will remain in the arsenal).
I finally have the "no excuses" set up I've been striving for. (Future GAS attacks notwithstanding, these three pieces are definitely keepers for me).
Forgive me if I've further threadjacked the original post, but it seemed the obvious pace to pose the preamp question.

Just thought I'd chime in here. Nothing really to add, though. Just didn't want to be left out of the conversation. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

By the way, I just posted a 6 microphone, 2 preamp shootout in the Gear forum. It includes 2 mics around the $150 mark - the AT2050 and the AKG 200 (now replaced by the -220), and the CAD e100s mentioned here that I purchased for $325 from B&H. Take a look and chime in if you wish! _________________ Best regards,

While on vacation last week I did a couple of jobs from my hotel room using my new, $100 MXL V67N. I had no complaints from the clients, and listening to some of the recordings back home, the voice quality was remarkably good although I think my pillow fort could have used one or two more pillows. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Those aren't pillows!
$162 is close to the target price... MXL V88 at Amazon. Love this mic. It's mythical list price is a hefty $700, but sub-$200, it's a winner (IMHO). _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I agree.. great broadcast mic...many happy clients.. only bummer is you it's not a convenient travel mic despite its compact size _________________ Lee Kanne

Exactly! That's what I bought it for originally, thinking that it was "close enough" of a match to my Gefell M930 (both the V88 and the M930 have been compared to the TLM-103) for use while traveling. I liked it A LOT.
But despite the fact that the mic itself is tiny, it comes in a big honking aluminum case that is just too big for air travel - for me at least, when I travel with my petite wife and 8 yr old daughter and have my hands full as it is. So I sold it on eBay.
Now I'm thinking of buying another and seeing if I can make a smaller case for it, maybe even see if it fits a smaller shock mount too. (I don't like my AT2050 travel mic, but it is *extremely* portable). _________________ Best regards,

I posed the question to MXL and they said there is no way to attach a simple hard mount. I asked if there was a smaller shock mount available and they had no frikkin clue. I'm fearful of using that mic without a pop filter, so now u are traveling with a pop filter and shock mount. Defeats the portability _________________ Lee Kanne

I had a HORRIBLE Nightmare last night!
I dreamed I was eating a Giant Marshmellow.
And I woke up and my Pillow was gone!
Oh sorry ...I thought for a minute this was the thread for Pillow jokes. _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |

I think there may be a potential business opportunity here: manufacturing smaller cases to make "travel mics" more suitable for travel. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
