Many of you may remember my recording booth. Since the move to the northwest I haven't been able to find a place to put it (besides in pieces in the garage).

We downsized a bit in the move and now my office is upstairs in a loft. It's a large open area that can look out over the front entry. As you can imagine, it's not the best place for recording. It's like trying to take the reflections out of an old English cathedral.

I’ve tried a quickly thrown-together version of Hart’s sound booth (sans the blanket) and I still get a lot of life.

I have one small closet under the stairs. It’s the perfect size and, with a bit of foam, I think it’ll sound just spiffy. I don’t mind the distance. I can start the recording upstairs and head to the closet.

Here’s the problem. Wiring. I am kind of a freak about wiring. I like a nice tidy appearance. How do I get that much cable (Microphone AND Headphone) downstairs? I had thought about concealing it under the carpet until it gets to the stairs and drilling a small hole under the stairway carpet and fishing the whole lot down to the closet.

My other concern is audio quality. Will the distance have any effect on the quality of my audio chain? I have a guy here that can make any length I need. He’ll even solder the XLR connectors and headphone jacks on AFTER I get the cable downstairs.

Long story short (too late); what are your thoughts?

Dave,

From what I've read and heard, if it's under 100 feet you should be cool if you use good quality cable like Gotham or Magomi. I can recommend the Gotham GAC 3 which is fantastic and cheaper than Magomi. The other site is www.gearslutz.com. You may already know about it. It's engineers and producers and all they do is sound recordings for bands and what not. They could definitely answer your question for sure because they do it everyday. Just thought I'd pass that along.

Dave,

We have mike and headphone runs in our studios at work that are at least 80 feet with no sonic quality issues. (Our studios were designed by Russ Berger and if you know studio design you know that name.) For a run of what, 30 or 40 feet, tops? You're not going to have a problem, as long as you follow Russ' excellent advice about using high quality cable.

The Tranzport is a nifty looking device. I've been saving my pennies to run a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into my booth but this looks interesting.

Brian, I have used a tranzport at a friend's studio... love it! Ordered one right after that session.

It does look cool. It won't replace a computer monitor though if you want to avoid printing out scripts, or if you need to do ADR while watching video.

Thanks for the note Edo.

Mary, that's the catch isn't it? It's a matter of priorities I suppose.
