Google's "Studio" is simply a version of webRTC. It is an offshoot of their push for better communication.

I have a private interface for webRTC I call "Janguhl" which is a higher level of Studio's offering and has record features among other items which make it very desirable. I will shoot you a link if you wish. Just give me a few days as I am out of town for my birthday.

Is it just me or their pricing system clumsy? You buy "tokens" which are good for 90 minute sessions? What studio is gonna want to micromanage tokens? Just give them a flat monthly fee for unlimited usage.

+1 to that!

The whole "token" idea is a very bad one.

Very much counter to the KISS philosophy of successful business practices.

Lots of choices may be good to have on a salad bar, but I am wondering if the sheer number of potential alternatives to ISDN described in just this thread may be too much of a good thing. When Source Connect was the only contender, it became the de facto choice, despite its flaws. With four or five options fragmenting the marketplace, it is quite possible that none of them will take hold.

You can see how it turned out with VHS vs BETA. Beta was way better....but politics won out.

Or more recently...."Blu-ray and HD DVD players became commercially available starting in 2006. In early 2008, the war was decided when several studios and distributors shifted to Blu-ray disc. On February 19, 2008, Toshiba officially announced that it would stop the development of the HD DVD players, conceding the format war to the Blu-ray Disc format" - Wikipedia

Here with only TWO contenders, it still took 2 years to sort it all out. Eventually there is a winner. If I were SoundStreak...I would be GIVING AWAY the service to the major houses for free for the first year. FREE (in the beginning) worked great for ventures like Google, Facebook, Youtube and your local corner Drug Dealer. Gain acceptance first. (get 'em hooked) Become the de facto standard. THEN start to "milk the cow."

IMHO

Soundstreak has been giving it away to everybody for several years now.
It hasn't helped all that much with uptake yet. I'll do a Google Hangouts vs Source Connect test on Whittam's World soon. I believe John Taylor is using Luci Live with g.722 successfully so far, more testing needed. Latency issues in SC are mainly due to the somewhat crippled feature set of SCStandard, it's a nonissue with SCPro.

Seems like I saw where "All sessions are free through October 31, 2013."

I didn't know that have been free all this time.

I stand corrected.

I agree Jeff, but if talents embrace it, then that's an incentive for studios to go for it. Talents need to take the lead in the move from ISDN, because the studios aren't going to do it without a nudge (understandably).

You're forgetting the golden rule. Those that have the gold, make the rules. I can tell a studio tell I'm blue in the face that they should use Soundstreak, but if they want an ISDN session I'd better be able to say, 'what time would you like?' or they'll move on to someone who will. At that point, my 'preferences' aren't going to amount to a hill of beans to those writing the check and wanting to get the job done.

IMO, offering 'A, B or C' for the talent's 'choice' when ISDN is already in the rack and ready to go is a stretch that few studios will be willing to embrace. Something needs to MAKE the studios want to go that route and a 'talent's nudging' probably won't fall in that category.

In a similqr vein , just follow the $$$$

When an ISDN alternative is reliable enough and of the same quality AND
significantly more cost effective, enough to justify the studios, en masse,
to jettison their ISDN setup.....when and if all of those factors come together......

I still think that the ISDN Revolution won't happen until Verizon, AT&T, et al, say "We're done supporting this." Because it's more than just recording studios that depend on ISDN, it's TV stations too. Until that happens, ISDN is going to be around. Verizon may have gotten the ball rolling in the Northeast, but it hasn't taken hold. THe point about following the mony is absolutely correct: the carriers are making bank by charging as much as they do for ISDN, and there is no comparable solution that has become standardized. When they stop making money on it, it will go away.

Just got back from a gig in Helsinki at my favorite studio Smile

Spoke with the engineer about Soundstreak. The idea of a token was a non-starter with him.

The studio has ISDN and Source Connect. They use SC because you cannot get an ISDN line in Sweden anymore!

He told me that he sometimes uses Skype and that can work well.

We will try a Soundstreak test before then end of the month if it works out.

But if Soundstreak hopes to replace ISDN then they better come up with something else than the Token system.

Oh...and what's the deal with Google Hangouts? Ever since they've adopted that I have not been able to use it. People try to call me, and I hear an alert and see some pop up boxes, but when I click on that or my Google Talk Chrome plug in or anything Google-ly, I can't open up the conversation. And, I'm on Google Plus. Seriously, I have G+ and my GMail open on Chrome tabs and can't get Hangouts to work.

This forced me to stop using my Google 'phone' number and buy a dedicated Skype number. Skype is pretty sweet. I get media producers from around the world messaging me directly now and then saying "Hey, what do you charge, would you read this???" And yeah, most of them have become repeat clients.

Somehow they have to fix the SS Token system...because the product is terrific.

Yeah, I swear with Google it's like you have to have some super tunnel vision which magically points you to the exactly correct text-based link which will then, when clicked on, include a path to the hangout among the several subsequently-available paths you could choose, and you may further hope that your special tunnel-vision powers are still fully functioning so that you may discern your next appropriate click - which, if you are lucky, could lead you to the super-secret hangout page. Maybe.

Or, if you're like me, the first ten times you use it you visually search the screen or dialog for a full thirty seconds while thinking the whole time, "WTF??!?"

There are some tricks I've learned so that I finally almost always succeed in scheduling/joining a hangout without hassle, but it is not intuitive at all. And I did still feel compelled to say almost always. Lips Are Sealed

Flexibility can be a blessing and a curse. Sometimes with google I think it leans too far toward the latter.

{{shrugs shoulders}}

and now, baaaaaack to soundstreak!

These ISDN replacement discussions always remind me of the "vision of the future" videos from the 50s and 60s that predicted we'd all be taking our nutrition in the form of pills and Tang-like beverages, or the ballyhoo that accompanied such miracle products as polyester double-knit clothes and Corfam shoes in the 70s.
Just because a new technology exists, doesn't mean people are going to adopt it. If we were at ground zero with regard to ISDN-like capability, any one of these new products would have a fighting chance to emerge as the standard. But ISDN is already the standard that the studios have invested in. And Source Connect has established itself as the clear second choice alternative. Producers would need to have a compelling reason to abandon that investment, and "it's the new thing" is not that reason.
They are not going to want to give up what is already in place, any more than people were willing to give up real food or cotton and wool clothing.
