I just did the proverbial double-take while watching TV. Actually, I wasn't quite watching at this particular moment - it was on in the background - but what my ears heard (for the product Activon) was: "...applied rectally where it hurts."

After I shook the cobwebs out of my head, I looked at the screen in time to see the graphic which stated Apply directly where it hurts.

I think I may have asked for another take if I were the director. Smile

Retake? NOT NECESSARILLY!

It made YOU look. You may be shocked (or at least mildly surprised) at the research that goes into message illusions. The technique you may be referring to is described in James Alburger's "The Art of Voice Acting" as "Linking;" moving consonant sounds from one word to the next.

When I had my agency, we did it all the time. I don't brag about it to the children.

Funny you mention that. I thought of "linking" when I heard it, probably because I had recently finished that section of James' book.

Not sure that the end result was what they hoped for, though. Without looking back at my original post, I couldn't tell you what the product was or what it was for.

I'll wager the director didn't hear a problem because he was looking at a script or at the very least, knew what to expect. It's the folks taken completely unawares who are subject to the surprise aural "innacuracies".

I remember in my full-time engineering days, we would sometimes call in one of the other engineers to listen to a mix with a fresh set of ears. Once I was called in for one particular TV spot and while I don't remember the exact line, I do remember asking if I really heard what I thought I heard, because it sounded like something which could be deemed...inappropriate. As a result a few tweaks were made before it was final.

We can tend to get too close to certain elements of a production, or sometimes don't see the forest for the trees.
