As I've posted this before, mentioning online what one makes/earns is vulgar. But it's also detrimental to one's career. In the past two weeks I know of 3 actors who got in trouble for this. One posted just in conversation their average monthly income, and a long time client saw this and used the info as leverage to to lower their fee. Two more were dropped by agents for posting financial info. There's never a reason to post what one earns unless you are desperate to brag or in need of attention. Keep your earnings to yourself!

Pick your audience and specifics are never a good idea. I often make a business point which is income related (the idea of a business is to make a profit) and am happy to back it up with numbers. The points are general and are more about the audience as opposed to "me, me, me" MASSIVE YACHT buying numbers. The bragging fools no one and is counter productive.

What you say, where and why is important and also be mindful that some people are too stupid to understand what you may mean.

Worth adding stuff to this thread as what Bob wrote was worth reading.

So here's another "word of advice"

Oooh, I liked the processing. Smile

Discussing wages in a corporation is bad enough - never mind as a freelancer! Anyone can win or lose their best clients overnight. Just keep going...

I believe it was a smart guy who put it best: "Think on!"

Agreed, Bob. It is in poor taste. The only folks who need to know your income are you, your partner, the union, and the IRS (or non-US equivalent).

When asked, my standard answer is that I earn enough to pay the bills and have enough left over to have some fun.

... and that is all anyone needs!

In the general context of this thread mine is usually "I muddle though". If I'm talking, or as I've done on a few occasions, worked with groups or individuals on the subject of building a VO business I do go into detail as I wouldn't tell people to do something I hadn't done and made work for myself. Well, I wouldn't would I? I'm not a coach.

I'm afraid I'm ambivalent regarding this. If someone wants to tell (an accurate figure) I guess it's their right. If anything it can give others an idea of what's possible in this industry and a goal to go after.

I'll never give specifics, but I will say that last year I earned enough for a yacht (rental) and plan to spend a whole week(end) cruising along the coast (of Portland).

Scott, that is unless you work for a government agency in California and find you income, benefits, and eventually retirement gov't income posted on a public website.

Was it a MASSIVE YACHT? I've stopped buying them as I need to get some this weight off. My doctor, (yes he is mine, I own him) says loCal high fibre Yachts are no excuse. I have had to give up fish n chips and MASSIVE YACHTS. The wine? NEVER!!!!

Do you know how much I earned this morning? Enough to buy a MASSI .... Oh, wait, not allowed to do that any more!

I've earned enough to be happy.

Oh. Wait. Money doesn't buy happiness!
(And how true that is!)

I earned enough to buy a throw cushion (just the one) that would lie on the couch in the MASSIVE YACHT's stateroom.

Hey! It's a start!
