Alot of the discussion here has been about getting that "warm sound"
A $10,000 vocal chain can get the job done but if that is not in your budget... an aural exciter is another way of getting a nice thick sound.

An aural exciter basically boosts the input harmonics and not the amplitude like an eq does, so there is no need to worry about boosting the overall signal.

I'll post an AB soon so you can judge for yourself.

Aphex makes nice unit.

can someone explain exactly what "warmth" is?

I know it's hot topic, but I'm trying to keep a cool head about it.

I ask because I got a new preamp that uses a tube for a supposedly "warm" sound and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be hearing....

a small bit of distortion that fuzzes up the bottom.

at least that's what I've always heard when listening to "warm" preamps, mics, etc.

Around here "warm" rhymes with "bomb".

Just thought I'd throw that in.

Warm: a smooth unencumbered sound with comfortable bass, mids, and highs.

I have always said warm is not too much bass or low end, with a smooth "real" sound. Lots of "presense" and no noticible or transient highs.

Listen to a nice Neumann U-87 Gold and you will know "warm".

So the author of this poem must be from your neck o'the woods as well. Always wanted to know how to rhyme "warm" with "harm."

"I love little pussy
her coat is so warm
and if I do not hurt her
she'll do me no harm"

Well, 'round here "harm" rhymes with "farm", only without the "R".

Yep, mostly.
Harm is like "hahm"
"Warm" os is more like "wawm."

What can I tell you? The native way of saying "Berwick" is a cross between "BEER-wick" and "Buick"

Now I'm curious... What's the difference between the U87 Gold (which to my knowledge was only used to reference the 24Kt Gold versions that were built for Neumann's 70th Anniversary) and the standard model upon which they are built? To mine ears, there's never been a difference between that and the standard AI.

Sadly, these things are too subjective. I think that the red mode for the Horch RM2J is "warm", but it's the distortion caused by the extra juice being pumped into the tube circuit and transformer, with the fixed cardoid pattern that gives it that characteristic.

The differences are more than "skin deep" between the Ai, Standard (Classic) U 87, and the U 87 Gold from Neuman. Mainly the transformers in each are somewhat different, other components in the microphones are also unique.

I own both the Classic AND the Gold. Each has a different sound with the same settings on pre-amps, etc.... I like the Gold better due to it's higher quality components and sound.

GP (Greg Phelps) has a new microphone which the manufacturer uses the old style of microphone making - one-at-a-time, and by hand. At a third of the cost of a U 87, this microphone has the warmth and presense of the Neuman's. GP is going through a little metamorphasis and needs your support now, so drop him an email or PM - and ask about the quality of this microphone, you will be surprised with the sound from this product. You might end up buying one for yourself.

Remeber, warmth and presense are usually synonymous. Distortion is never the answer.

Toodles
