Yes, "were" is correct.
I forget what it's called grammatically, but when you use "if I" or "if he" then you use "were".

And remember, one must keep one's watercress to oneself.

That's "Conjunctivitis".
It's either an inflammation of the outer membrane of the eye, or an overwheling need to link up words and phrases and clauses.
